Naming of sports complexes big business
Saturday, May 12, 2007
Dear Editor,
Recently I read where the government is having trouble naming the new sports somplex in Trelawny and also worrying about funding to maintain the facility.
The prime minister wants to give the complex the name of a local person, but how will that translate into funds for the maintenance? The people of Jamaica should not be further burdened with such cost. In this time of global marketing, the people would be best served if the naming rights were leased to one of the conglomerates in Jamaica. The yearly income from the lease then can be earmarked for the maintenance of the facility.
The conglomerate would get in return vast advertisement from the fact that its name on this facility would be seen the world over.
Of course, other issues, such as sub-partnerships for advertisements inside the facility by other companies would have to be worked out.
The naming of sports complexes around the world is now big business, and should be no different in Jamaica. Sabina Park, the National Stadium and the National Arena should also be renamed and branded with self-maintenance.
