IMC chairman Pat Rousseau (left) and Wayne Chen, chairman of CVM Group sign the agreement for the television broadcast rights to a FIFA football programming package from 2007 through 2014 at the offices of CVM-TV on Thursday.
International Media Content Limited (IMC), parent company of regional sports cable giant SportsMax, on Thursday announced an agreement with the CVM Group for the television broadcast rights to a FIFA football programming package from 2007 through 2014.
The deal includes the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and the 2014 FIFA World Cup and will begin with the broadcast of this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup (June, 2007) and the FIFA Under-17 (August, 2007) and Under-20 (June, 2007) World Cups.
The announcement was made in a signing event at CVM television, which included the chairman of IMC, Pat Rousseau and chairman of CVM Group, Wayne Chen.
Chen boasted that the package purchased from IMC means that CVM Group has a significant and unprecedented stake in major international football.
"This will allow us to increase our football catalogue and continue to provide superior quality sports content to our viewers islandwide, starting with the Gold Cup competition next month," Chen said, noting further, "We are particularly pleased to have brought the Cricket World Cup to Jamaica and now, with our exclusive local broadcast ownership of the greatest show on earth, at the Under-17, Under-20 and senior level, CVM will cement its place as Jamaica's station for sports".
The FIFA properties included in the agreement are the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup finals; 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 FIFA Men's U-20 and U-17 World Cups; the FIFA 2009 & 2013 Confederations Cups; as well as the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
IMC boss Rousseau explained that the signing with CVM represents a great continuation of his company's transmission plans for bringing even more FIFA football content to the Caribbean over the next eight years.
"We were successful in the transmission of the FIFA 2006 World Cup Germany to approximately 40 million households in the Caribbean in three languages and so this time around, IMC is the best positioned to bring high quality coverage of FIFA's content to the regional broadcasters and by extension the regional sports fans," Rousseau said.
A key component of the agreement is that the Men's U-20 and U-17 World Cups and the Gold Cup all slated for this summer will be shown jointly on SportsMax and CVM.
CVM will provide joint coverage of the properties throughout Jamaica, while SportsMax will provide regional coverage to their subscribers in some 18 Caribbean countries. As a part of IMC's agreement, SportsMax will also have exclusive coverage of the FIFA Women's World Cup in August, 2007.
"SportsMax is proud to team with CVM for the broadcast of the FIFA Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups, the Confederations Cup and the Gold Cup. This now means that the Jamaican audience is guaranteed to get the widest ever coverage of FIFA competitions," said Newton Robertson, the chief operating officer of SportsMax.
As it did for the FIFA 2006 World Cup Germany, IMC will act as host broadcasters in the Caribbean for FIFA properties through 2014.
In addition to the FIFA Properties, IMC also has broadcast rights for the Red Stripe Champions Cup and the Reggae Boyz home matches for the Caribbean and North America, which will be aired jointly on SportsMax, CVM and Fox Soccer Channel.
