In a statement, the FA said it had charged the 34-year-old, who startedMonday's draw with Everton,*with making a gesture that was "abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper".

It added it was "an aggravated breach in that it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief".
Did Karl write this for the FA?

I hope these people get as mad when it involves acts against black players!

Everton embarrassed after Lukaku defends his pal Anelka over 'quenelle' row in video hosted on club's own website

Everton have been forced to remove an interview of Romelu Lukaku lending his support to Nicolas Anelka over the West Brom striker’s ‘quenelle’ gesture.

Anelka was charged by the Football Association on Tuesday for the alleged anti-Semitic gesture performed after he scored in his side’s 2-2 draw at Upton Park on December 28.

But speaking after Everton’s 1-1 draw at West Brom, Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, backed the Frenchman.

‘He was my idol since I was a kid and still is,’ said Lukaku in a Sky Sports interview which was picked up by Everton’s media company and aired on the club’s official website.

‘He shouldn’t be banned for that. He just supported a stand-up comedian in France, so we don’t have to make such a big deal about it.’

Anelka faces a lengthy ban from the FA for the controversial gesture, but Lukaku added: ‘I hope he doesn’t get suspended because he’s a player people want to see on the pitch.’

Everton’s director of communications Alan Myers said: ‘This was Romelu’s opinion – he is entitled to that, but it is not the opinion of the club.

‘As soon as we saw the comments, we removed them from our site to minimise any offence that may have been caused.‘

Everton have distanced themselves from Lukaku's defence of Anelka and have removed the footage of Lukaku's comments from their website.

'It is the player's opinion and not the opinion held by the football club,' Everton's director of communications Alan Myers said.
'We moved quickly to remove any interview that may have been offensive to anyone.

'The last thing we want to do is cause offence to anyone.'
It is understood that, due to the way the website is managed in collaboration with external partners, the interview from the post-match mixed zone after Everton's 1-1 draw at West Brom was conducted by another media organisation and uploaded without anyone at the club initially being fully aware of its content.
Everton have yet to speak to Lukaku, who is an ambassador for football's anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, about what he said but it is believed the striker's relatively young age - he is 20 - and friendship with Anelka will be taken into consideration.
There is no suggestion the striker will be disciplined as a result of his comments.

Anelka banned and fined £80,000 for 'quenelle' gesture

West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka has been banned for five matches and fined £80,000 for his controversial "quenelle" gesture. He has also been ordered to complete a compulsory education course, following a two-day Football Association hearing.

Anelka, 34, denied his use of the sign, described as an "inverted Nazi salute", was anti-Semitic. He has the right to appeal against the ruling. He made the action during West Brom's draw with West Ham in December.
