Barcelona Tell United: £40m For Eto'o
Barcelona have reportedly told Manchester United that they will have to cough up 60 million euros if they want to land Samuel Eto'o.
The report, carried in the Independent, claims that the approach was made last month by United's chief executive David Gill, which is when they were told about the £40million price tag.
The Red Devils have not given up hope of landing the Cameroon international, but they have made clear that they will not beet Barcelona's asking price.
Eto'o himself seems to be uncertain over his future at the moment, not very keen to leave, and yet, not completely convinced he should stay after the public spat with Ronaldinho and Rijkaard.
The head-strong Cameroon international has also sacked his agent, and will carry out negotiations himself, thus delaying any real discussion until the end of the season.
However, Barcelona's recent links with Thierry Henry suggest that even they could be having second thoughts about a talented striker who can have a disruptive influence. Many at the Camp Nou blame his public outburst against Rijkaard and Ronaldinho for the team's Champions League exit at the hands of Liverpool.
Coming as it did just days befor the first leg, Barcelona never quite recovered from it, and crashed to an unexpected 2-1 home defeat (their first in Europe under Rijkaard), and crashed out despite winning at Anfield.
Milan are also chasing Eto'o according to reports emanating from Italy. However, the Rossoneri interest in Ronaldinho creates a problem, as the Catalans seem unwilling to lose both Eto'o and Ronaldinho together.
It is understood that Sir Alex is ready to splash the cash to land a top striker, and will swoop for Michael Owen or Dimitar Berbatov should the Eto'o move fail to go through. Chelsea are also looking on with interest.
