    'They were horrendous!' Rodgers blasts officials as he claims nothing went Liverpool's way during City defeat

    Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers could face charges from the Football Association after launching a blistering attack on the officials following his side's 2-1 defeat by Manchester City.

    Rodgers labelled the performance of Lee Mason and his assistant referees John Brooks and Derek Eaton as 'horrendous' and the FA will take a particularly dim view of the suggestions of bias when the Liverpool boss then expressed his surprise that a referee from Greater Manchester was selected to officiate this fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

    Rodgers was particularly infuriated by an offside call against Raheem Sterling when the winger was played through on goal, while he also felt that Liverpool should have had a penalty when Luis Suarez was pulled to the ground at a set-piece towards the end of the game.

    The Liverpool manager said: 'I was very proud of the players. I thought they were absolutely outstanding.

    'They had no help whatsoever from the officials. I never go on about officials but I thought today they were horrendous, in terms of performance. We had nothing that went our way at all.'

    When pressed on the officials' performance, Rodgers continued: 'Where do you want me to start? I thought that we never got any of the decisions.

    'I thought that the linesman on the offside one - they weren't even on the same cut of grass, and if you're working at this level, you have to get that right. It's not even a difficult one, that.

    'These are the things we work on and talk about, we are asking a young player to try and break their line. It was a perfect timed run and he's given offside when he's through one-on-one on goal.

    'There was another incident in the second half when Luis Suarez didn't get a free kick on the edge of the penalty box when Joleon Lescott comes right through him.

    'That was waved play on. It is arguable that there was a penalty at the end. Luis Suarez can't jump because he's tugging at his shirt.

    'I thought it was throughout the evening as well, so hopefully we don't have a Greater Manchester referee again for the Liverpool v Manchester City game.'

    'I'm sure we won't get for Liverpool/Man City somebody from the Wirrel. I don't think we would get that.'

    Rodgers was referring to referee Lee Mason coming from Bolton in Greater Manchester and he admits that he was taken aback to see the official asked to officiate a match between a Liverpool and Manchester side.

    'I was surprised that we are playing in Manchester and we have a referee from Greater Manchester. I was surprised by that when I seen it, to be honest,' Rodgers explained.

    Among refereeing circles, there is little that angers the authorities more than the questioning of an officials' integrity and Rodgers can now expect a call from the FA in the coming days.

    What were your thoughts on the game?

    I was very proud of the players. I thought they were absolutely outstanding. They had no help whatsoever from the officials. I never go on about officials but I thought today they were horrendous, in terms of performance.

    We had nothing that went our way at all. I will focus on the players, they really took the game to a team that is a top, top side, full of top, European players.

    As I said, we are disappointed not to have won the game, never mind losing the game. They showed great confidence and belief. We scored a wonderful goal and we could have had a few more. There are things to learn from the goals that we conceded which were disappointing.

    What was it about the ref's performance that particularly annoyed you? Where do you want me to start?

    Was Luis going down too easily?

    Players go down differently. We haven't seen anything like that from Luis. They were clear free-kicks. It wasn't just that, it was other moments in the game.

    How good was Liverpool's performance?

    I was here when Bayern Munich came and they were outstanding that night. But apart from that, every other team that Manchester City have played here - and some really good sides as well - they have scored a hatful of goals. I think everyone walking away from this stadium would have felt that we at least deserved a point tonight. We are disappointed that we haven't won.

    I thought we were excellent in our attitude, some of the quality of our movement was exceptional and for me, it is great to see because it is what we work on in the training field. We've lost the game but we take a great deal of encouragement from here.

    Have Liverpool gained respect last few weeks?

    I think people will go away and look at us as a team that is going to be u there challenging. Our objective is to set up camp in the top 4.

    This is what the club has been striving for. We have shown consistently that we are in with a right good chance of doing that this season.

    Performances like tonight and like at Tottenham show that we have the quality to do that. We didn't get the points but we will recover well now and get onto the next game.

    What did you mean by a ref from Greater Manchester?

    I was surprised that we are playing in Manchester and we have a referee from Greater Manchester.

    I was surprised by that when I seen it, to be honest.

    Is it not just because more local refs are appointed on Bank Holiday?

    I'm not sure what it is. Swansea played Chelsea today and that is not exactly local.

    Have you spoken to ref?

    No, I haven't. I won't get the chance probably to see him. I didn't want it to cloud the performance of my players. I never speak to officials, I normally steer clear of that.

    I really need to protect the players this evening because they were outstanding and they got nothing that went their way.

    As I said, the level of our game was high, we had chances and we didn't take them. I thought that their performance wasn't so good; I'm just being open and honest.

    Are you concerned by how bad the officials' calls were?

    Listen, the officials make mistakes. I just felt that the mistakes made tonight shouldn't have happened at this level.

    This is a big game. With Raheem Sterling through on goal, you are talking about three feet, it wasn't even the same cut of grass.

    To get that wrong, that's a big decision. Where you are as a linesman, you can see the whole picture. You are seeing everything. It's a poor decision and of course, if Raheem goes through, then he scores.

    Can you speak to the Premier League/PGMOL/Mike Riley etc? I think that I will get a call from an assessor and I will be asked my opinion on the performance.

    Would you bring these things up? I would ask the question. I'm sure we won't get for Liverpool/Man City somebody from the Wirrel. I don't think we would get that.

    Yes, that was a bad offside call against Liverpool on Sterling. City did not stand a chance against that play had it not been for referee error.

      Had the goal stood and LFC gone 2 up (in spite of what Bricky says) the complexion of the game would have been different. But this is the nature of the sport... It was a good game for LFC, I think Chelsea will have a game on their hands!

        After watching Eto'o miss three sitters today, Ramires missed one among others, I am not sure what to expect. There is so much talent in this team, but there is a certain amount of "goal scoring impotence" hanging over the team.

        Liverpool is playing well. Hopefully we can shackle Suarez without him going down in the box to win any penalties. I think Chelsea should win, but not necessarily comfortably.

          'pool deserved at least a draw...but I would prefer to

          think the calls were error and not bias. ...although the ref may have been influenced by Suarez's past transgressions and was reluctant to make some calls for fair of being conned. Granted refs are supposed to base calls on 'what is before them' but some refs are better able to step on the field free of the weight of past incidences than others.

          'pool was unlucky!

          Some persons may use the holding by Skrtel the Liverpool center-back as providing balance but they should forget it as his opponent was always holding him by 'crocking arm' on his shoulder or under his chin/upper chest area a 'six of one=half-a-dozen of the other' number of incidences not worth a refs whistle.

            Think they have Chelsea's beating. In JA I have heard horse racing enthusiasts call such "horses for courses" and boxing aficionados call it 'styles for match-ups'.

            In any case, X's rookie coach has done a fantastic job. He has Sturridge and Gerard out, two top drawer players, yet has his team 'purring'!

              I think Suarez over-dramatised the holding by spread eagling his arms the way he did rather than just falling naturally, I think that would have influenced the ref's decision... one aspect of his game Suarez needs to work on... he might get more of those calls minus the drama.

                Thank you, Karl! Some are acting like Kompany was simply trying to jump for the ball!

                In any case, it is one thing to commit a foul that is hard for the officials to pick up, quite another to not get a call when your shirt is being tugged 3 feet off your back!
