Jose Mourinho has hit out at the decision to schedule Chelsea's now virtually meaningless clash with Manchester United so late in the season.
Chelsea lost their Premiership crown following their 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Sunday, and now only pride is at stake in Wednesday's tie against Sir Alex Ferguson's champions at Stamford Bridge.
The game was originally scheduled for 18th April, but both teams reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and could not fulfil the fixture.
Now Mourinho has revealed his disappointment that his side were not handed the chance to pressurise their rivals before it was too late.
"Congratulations to Manchester United on winning a great Premiership race," wrote Mourinho in his programme notes for Wednesday's clash.
"This game, however, should have been played on April 18 when the title race was open and the distance was three points.
"To have Chelsea-Manchester United in the fixtures on the day of a possible FA Cup semi-final was not a great decision."
Giving Manchester United a guard of honour on Wednesday night will hammer home Chelsea's disappointment at missing out on a third league title in succession, and captain John Terry has vowed that the squad will return stronger next term.
"With our injuries and other problems this season we've done really well, given a good account of ourselves," said Terry.
"But we must give no excuses. United have won and we have to congratulate them. "The Premiership means so much to us. It's been the foundation of our work here over the last three years and not to have it now doesn't feel right. So next season we will come back stronger.
