Portland Timbers' Donovan Ricketts wins second Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year honor
Donovan Ricketts is back on top as the best goalkeeper in Major League Soccer.
Two years after he was sent packing by the LA Galaxy for a younger heir-apparent and a year removed from a sobering turn in net with an expansion team, the 36-year-old Portland Timbers star was named the Allstate MLS Goalkeper of the Year on Wednesday for the second time in his career.
Ricketts – who topped four-time nominee Nick Rimando of Real Salt Lake and 2012 award winner Jimmy Nielsen of Sporting Kansas City in the voting – also won the award in 2010, when he helped led the Galaxy to the Supporters’ Shield. He becomes the fourth player in league history to win the award multiple times, joining Zach Thornton, Joe Cannon and Pat Onstad.
