Johnson declared bankrupt - Jamaican international owes debt to UK taxman.
Reports emerging out of the United Kingdom indicate that the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), a body responsible for the administration and collection of taxes filed the petition on behalf of the Reggae Boy.
The amount owed by Johnson was not disclosed by the HMRC but it was revealed that the body initially petitioned for the footballer's bankruptcy on May 24. The order was granted by the court on September 4.
The player who has spent six years at Sheffield United, has made more than 200 appearances for the club since signing from Bradford in 2007, including 13 appearances this season. The club has declined to comment on the situation as have the HMRC who do not comment on the affairs of specific individuals.
"For legal reasons, HMRC does not comment on the tax affairs of individuals. Our aim is not to bankrupt individuals but to collect, as efficiently as we can, the debts that are due and to prevent any situation deteriorating further, using the range of powers available to us," a spokeswoman of the body told UK publication the*()
"HMRC only initiates bankruptcy action where it believes this is the best course of action to protect the interests of the Exchequer, in respect of a particular debt."
Bankruptcy is defined as a legal status of a person or other entity that cannot repay the debts it owes to creditors. In most jurisdictions, bankruptcy is imposed by a court order, often initiated by the debtor.
