Former KSAFA President takes aim at JFF

    12:34 pm, Mon October 14, 2013

    Stewart Stephenson

Former Kingston and St Andrew Football Association President Stewart Stephenson has taken aim at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) following Jamaica's failed 2014 Word Cup bid.

Stephenson who was addressing players and members of the KSAFA Business House Football Association awards function on the weekend, says those in charge of local football have some serious thinking to do.

“Our leaders in football must tell us, are we going to continue to invest in five-a-side in our Under13, 15, 17 players... in our Premiere League, or we going to abandon it? Because if you are going to get to the National team and then you bring in a number of these foreign based players, some of whom have never even seen Jamaica before they came here, what are we saying about the future of our football?”

But Stephenson says while he is not against foreign bornplayers making the team it must be done in a way to create a mix with the local based.

He also notes that it's time to identify a system of play which will be attractive.

“When you look at Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama even the United States, don’t you see we are building out of midfield with holding players. Don’t you see they are using creative midfielders, play makers out in the middle, I suggest again, going forward for Jamaica, we need to develop a system that is Jamaican, our style. So that every player coming up, when they get to the National Programme, they know what kind of game we expect”, Stephenson added.

He gave his thoughts on solutions for the current problems faced by Jamaica’s football programme at the recent KSAFA Business house awards function last weekend.
