SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Jason Kreis, Major League Soccer's all-time leading scorer, retired as a player to become Real Salt Lake's coach on Thursday.
Owner Dave Checketts said the team's 0-2-2 record prompted the change.
Kreis replaces John Ellinger, who will stay with the team as technical director and director of soccer operations. General manager Steve Pastorino resigned.
"I want to win," said Kreis, an 11-year MLS veteran who joined Salt Lake as its first player. "There's nothing else more important to me. Nothing else even comes close to motivating me, and nothing else consumes me the way that a disappointing loss can."
Kreis, who has a record 108 career goals, becomes the youngest head coach in the MLS. Players learned about the staffing changes on Thursday in a meeting with Checketts.
"I know that the decisions that we've made are the right ones for our franchise," Checketts said. "This is just a results-oriented business
