Andres Iniesta has rejected Barcelona's first offer of a new contract throwing his long term future at the Nou Camp into doubt.
The Neymar effect has taken its toll on the Barcelona dressing room with the team that beat Manchester United in the 2011 Champions League being broken up to help pay for the Brazilian's signing.
Supporters were disappointed to see Thiago Alcantara, Eric Abidal and David Villa all taken off the wage bill this summer but will be stunned to hear Iniesta's future has now been put in doubt.
Snub: Andres Iniesta (L) has turned down Barcelona's first offer of a new contract
The man who scored the most important goal in Spain's history to win the 2010 World Cup had expected to put pen to paper before Christmas on a deal that would see him extend his current contract due to run out in 2015.
But Barcelona's first offer is understood to be well below the expectations of the three times European Cup and two-times European Championship winner.
The arrival of Neymar has upset the natural order of Barcelona's pay scale with the 21-year-old now the club's second top earner. Barcelona have several veterans of their incredible recent history waiting for the imbalances to be put right with new deals.
Neymar effect: The Brazilian is the club's second highest earner, after Lionel Messi, which is said to have upset the natural order of Barcelona's pay scale
But off the pitch president Sandro Rosell sees Neymar as his principal commercial cash cow and the old guard may suffer.
Iniesta has also seen his role on the pitch diminished so far this season. The 30-year-old midfielder has only started three of the five games in the league this season and only played one full 90 minutes as new coach Tata Martino plays a less-possession based style off football.
The player who joined Barcelona as kid from Albacete wants to retire at the Catalan club but Manchester City and Bayern Munich will now top the list of teams watching developments.
Wait and see: Iniesta wants to finish his playing days with the Catalan giants but news of his contract snub could alert the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich
