"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Chelsea outcast Juan Mata becomes transfer target for Rafa Benitez and Napoli

Mata’s team-mates are mystified over Blues manager Jose Mourinho’s tough stance on the player who was left out of the squad for yesterday’s derby against Fulham.

Benitez, now in charge at Napoli, is prepared to make himself even more unpopular with the Chelsea fans by attempting to take advantage of Mata’s situation in the January transfer window.

Mourinho has warned Mata that Oscar is his first-choice No.10 and says the Spaniard “has to fight and work for his opportunities”, after performances which were “not convincing”.

That has shocked Chelsea fans and players, who voted Mata Player of the Year last season and believe he is one of best talents at the club.

A source told Sunday Mirror Sport: “The players are as surprised as everyone over Mourinho’s treatment of Mata.

“Most of the players thought Mata was Chelsea’s best player last season and would never have imagined his place would be under threat.”

Mourinho and Chelsea insisted Mata was not for sale over the summer, but Benitez is ready to test their resolve in the New Year if the 25-year-old’s situation is still uncertain.

Benitez and Mata had a close allegiance during his six months as Chelsea’s interim manager, with the playmaker producing his best form under the ex-Liverpool boss.
