Moyes' hopes of face-saving move for Coentrao scuppered by Real Madrid

Manchester United’s last gasp attempt to bring in a new left back failed because they had left a complex two player three club operation too late in the transfer window.

Real Madrid wanted Fabio Coentrao off their wage list for a season having failed to sell him and his agent Jorge Mendes wanted to move him to United.

Reds boss David Moyes hoped to sign the Portugal defender on a season-long loan deal after failing to land Everton left back Leighton Baines.
VIDEO Scroll down to watch Marouane Fellaini seals £27.5m transfer to Manchester United

Missed out: Fabio Coentrao will not be joining up with Wayne Rooney at Manchester United

But for Madrid to sanction the move, they had to have time to bring in Granada left-back Guilherme Siqueira in his place, and he had already gone out on loan to Benfica.

Siquiera had been left out Granada’s team during the last two week's of the season and was on stand-by to replace Coentrao.

But with it appearing that Coentrao would be going nowhere Benfica moved for the attacking full-back and closed his loan deal.

Deal breaker: Real Madrid wanted Guilherme Siqueira (right) to replace Coentrao but he already joined Benfica

When United finally moved for Coentrao, Madrid tried to undo Siquiera's temporary switch to Portugal and there was hope for United when it appeared both Coentrao’s move to England and Siqueira’s transfer to Madrid had been cleared by the league.
But Benfica resisted and there was a lack of will on Madrid’s part, delighted at the business they had done with selling Ozil to Arsenal for £42.5million, and having already told coach Carlo Ancelotti he was keeping Coentrao.

Ancelotti had told Madrid president Florentino Perez that he wanted Coentrao to stay and had even gone public on the player remaining at the club at the weekend. There were too many parties wanting to block the deal for United to push it through despite the efforts of Mendes.

Red faces: United's move Ander Herrera descended into farce

Coentrao will now be included in Real Madrid’s Champions League squad, leaving United without the man they hoped would compete with Patrice Evra at left-back.

United's move for another La Liga target, Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, descended into farce when three imposters strode into the Spanish league's headquarters pretending to be officials of the Old Trafford outfit.
The trio left an hour later, apparently unable to complete the paperwork required to complete the deal.
Yet United knew nothing of their existence. And as it turned out, the Herrera deal collapsed shortly afterwards anyway, with Moyes believing a £30.5m clause in the player's contract was too high.

Reunited: Fellaini with manager Moyes after signing for Manchester United

Marouane Fellaini seals his £27.5m transfer to Manchester United

So, even though the 24-year-old was keen to make the switch, United backed off, although Moyes remains a fan and could revisit the deal in January.
It was only minutes before the deadline closed that Marouane Fellaini was given the green light to rush through a £27.5million transfer from Everton - £4million more than United would have paid had they exercised an option in the player's contract which expired at the end of July.
Fellaini will bolster United's midfield options, which have seemed an obvious weakness for a number of years.
He also provides a goal threat, having scored 12 times last season, including the winner against United on the opening day of the campaign.
In a midfield where no-one other than Shinji Kagawa managed more than two, it provides the potential for obvious improvement.
However, with Herrera remaining in Bilbao and Real Madrid flatly rejecting a big-money offer for Sami Khedira, Moyes did not make the improvements he would have hoped for.

Didn't expect much after hearing Moyes saying the Liverpool gamr was the best he has seen his team...
There is that issue of available transferees refusing to play for Moyes which raises the question, can he keep the acclaimed ones he has if Man U is less than impressive?
No doubt one of Moyes' attributes is being prepared for opponents(this served him well when he was at Everstrong),not having Kawaga is an aberration,he needs to get his act together.
Find the core team and play it until thy kingdom comes.

The early performance of the manure team is not something anyone should be surprised by. It takes time for a team and new manager to get their act together and it is incredibly rare for a new manager to simply waltz in and pick up where prior success left off. Manu** is the biggest club in England and although I thoroughly dislike the club, the FACT is that they have the financial wherewithal to weather a down turn in fortunes to give the new manager time. Even if they were to fall out of the top 4 this year - which I do not think will happen - they have the money to buy whoever they want to come January to bolster reinforcements.

That said, to think that players don't want to play for Moyes is nonsense. People are not considering the unknown component in the transfer saga of how much of a constraint the club itself put on him. For example, it seems Manu**'s unwillingness to pay a Spanish tax of all things is what scuppered the Herrera deal - how can that be blamed on Moyes? Moyes - like any new manager - should be given until Christmas to see what he can do, if the club's performance indicates them falling out of the top 4, then the owners have a decision to make: either fire Moyes and bring someone who can get top January transfer talent in the door (which they will have to pay dearly for) or stick with Moyes and see where things go.

Regardless, to write of Manu** at this stage of the season or to label Moyes a flop, is patently ridiculous, if not downright stupid. If things however do take a turn for the worse, and the new manager is a flop and Manu** do fall from grace, no one would be happier than me, but I'll wait to hear the music before I start to dance. Only mad people dance to a chune them hearing in them head.

The core of Chelsea players were there from Ranieri. He didn't make much change to the Inter team. Benetez got the same Inter team that won the UCL, what did he do with it?

Really? Big name managers who need £100m in transfer budgets maybe. You conveniently left out Rafa at Inter, Scolari at Chelsea, Rjkaard at Galatassary, Henckes in 2011 at Bayern, Ancellotti at PSG, I could go on, but the exception is not the norm. Do your homework and you will see that you are out of step with reality. Period.

X cannot name ANY OTHER MANAGERS than the ones he named except maybe adding Pep G. to the list (who inherited Frank's team). KMT. Anyone that is calling for a manager's head after 3 games has no real understanding of football. The same crew that were calling for Slurgie's head - when he went trophyless for seven years - were probably the ones jumping up and down the most when he was winning. Typical. That's why I will sik mi dawg on X if him sey one word if Rodgers wins anything.

With the *understandable* losses of his big name targets (Maktarhan (sp) and Willian) to CL clubs, he did a commendable job. Touré, who I was not excited about was huge in the first two games of the league, Aspas has been a trouble maker, although when Suarez comes back, him ago bench, but good to have around PLUS getting rid of useless squad members like Downing and Spearing. It is clear what kind of team he wants to build and how he wants the team to play. He has a vision and given time, resources and support, I am confident he will get there. Notice also, that him not afraid to "brown up the squad", unlike some of his predecessors...that should make Mo happy...and if Mo's assessment of Suarez is right...Suarez "uncomfortable".

You are overlooking the small matter that the Chelsea squad really doesn't have a striker who has produced much. To me, it says everything about Chelsea...they only have Ba and Torres now that Lukaku is gone.

Sorry - yes. But that still only leaves them 3 once they got the loan deal done with Lukaku. Lending Ba to Arsenal would have left them with an aging warrior (Eto'o) and an underperforming Torres...hardly the legs you need to challenge for honours in 4 campaigns.

Big up yourself Paul. Them expect a manager to come in and replace a legend (whether you like or hate him) and walk in and everything is going to be alright in 1 month. Big name manager??? Look how many has been at Chelsea over the past few years and it took Di Canio to win a huge cup. LOL. How much did Dicanio spend????

Manu have a lot of talent and the manager have to feed his way around. Look how X salvage "youth coach" and look at Liverpool now, they have a stronger squad than a year ago and they haven't splashed 100 million dollars in one transfer window. Moyes have to take time and find his way, if it nuh work out it don't work out but he can't be Fergie, He has to do his thing.

People talking bout Kagawa, but the man play a lot of ballgame over the summer, more than any other Manu player. Hernandez just coming back, Nani just coming back and Rooney out so the team will get better.

Why should I name other managers , are their that many ? point is you dont hand a multi billion dollar org over to a mid table manager, you just dont.

Doing that and wishing/hoping he can lead is a recipe for disasater.
