  • The boss speaks - Wenger: We will not panic buy...

Arsene Wenger has vowed to hold his nerve in the transfer market, in spite of depleted resources and a daunting Champions League draw.

The return of Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer - only the second arrival of the summer after French rookie Yaya Sanogo - has done little to allay fans' fears that a significant recruitment drive before Tuesday's deadline will not materalise.

Wenger has failed with bids for Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye, while Chelsea are adamant that Juan Mata will not be allowed to leave.

But the Frenchman, who must ready his side to face last year's finallists Borussia Dortmund, as well as Napoli and Marseille, in Europe, is refusing to panic.

"Yes," he told reporters when asked if he was still in the hunt for fresh faces.
"(When?) I don't know. I am confident. We will not panic buy, that is for sure. It's not my strength to panic.

"You need good players in every position, and especially you need an attitude and way to play the game. The players here know the way we want to play and that is important.

"If we can add players who can integrate with that style of play we will do it.
"We work very hard on that, if we cannot we will not do anything stupid just for the sake of saying that we have done something. We do what makes sense or not, that is simple."

Arsenal must first prepare for the visit of rivals Tottenham but despite the blow of losing striker Lukas Podolski for up to 10 weeks with a hamstring injury, Wenger was in bullish mood.

"It's important that we continue (our winning run)," he added. "It's a good opportunity to show our strengths against Tottenham.

"I must confess I am not too much worried about their risk and what they do. I believe you win games when you focus on yourself and the quality of our game."

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
