  • RIP Benitez

    Updated Jul 29, 2013 2:04 PM ET

Ecuador international and former Club America striker Christian Benitez has died after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest, less than a month after signing for Qatari club Al Jaish.

Benitez was admitted to hospital with severe stomach pain hours after making his debut against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup but died shortly afterwards. He was 27.

Sad. A young man, not even reach the prime of his life. RIP.

Very sad story and sounds a bit fishy to me...but no Hardy Boy left in me other than that. Do you know I have the entire Ecuador national team autograph on a team jersey including his from 2009-10? My old landlord got it for me as he was big in Emelec, one of the biggest clubs in Ecuador. I also have an Emelec team jersey with all the signatures of their players from the 2009-10 season as well.

I read somewhere that it was a ruptured appendix.
