Claude Makelele is not a slave - William Gallas is.

As the Chelsea manager launched a predictable broadside at France manager Raymond Domenech over his decision to call up Makelele, another member of Les Bleus and The Blues, William Gallas, was nowhere to be seen.

"Makelele is not a football player - Makelele is a slave," Mourinho declared with his trademark self-righteousness. "He's played the biggest game you can, the World Cup final, and now wants to retire but the coach told us if he is not playing for France, he is not playing for Chelsea. We know the rules. You are a slave, you have no human rights."

If Gallas was watching the interview, one imagines it was with a sense of disbelief.

Gallas has been at Chelsea for five seasons, since joining from Marseille in May 2001. He has played a vital role as the side changed from a decent side into double Premiership champions.

He now wants a fresh challenge, but with one year left on his contract he cannot explicitly demand a move.

Chelsea, unwilling to cash in on him because they don't need to financially, are willing to let him 'fester in the reserves' as punishment for what the club clearly view as impudence.

In effect, Gallas has won two titles, and now wants to move on but the coach has told him if he is not playing for Chelsea, he is not moving to another club. He knows the rules. He is now a slave to the final year on his deal; he has no human rights.

Those words should be strangely familiar to Mourinho. He has the choice
