Managing director of Petrojam Limited Winston Watson (right) meets with JFF president Crenston Boxhill (left), technical director Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic (second left) and Lovel Palmer, a member of the national senior Reggae Boyz team, to discuss Petrojam's continued sponsorship of the Reggae Boyz preparation for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa.
Petrojam has renewed its support for Jamaica's football programme with sponsorship of gasoline for local transportation of Jamaica's national football teams.
A previous three-year sponsorship agreement, which came to an end in 2006, was renewed and increased for a further four years (2007-2010). The sponsorship, while geared towards the qualification of the national senior team for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, will also cover the transportation needs of the seven national football teams.
When members of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the national football team visited the Petrojam Refinery two Fridays ago to discuss the sponsorship, both JFF president Crenston Boxhill and technical director Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic assisted in refuelling the Reggae Boyz Bus, at the Petrojam Refinery at Marcus Garvey Drive.
Petrojam has agreed to sponsor gasoline in the amount of J$4 million over four years with continuance of the funding linked to the performance of the senior team as they work towards qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Gasolene is intended for use in the two Reggae Boyz buses to transport the teams to training locations and practice games across the island.
Boxhill expressed his satisfaction with the sponsorship. "This donation is extremely important to our training programme and valuable to meeting the demands of our monthly cash flow," said the president. "The donation is important, particularly at this time when all national teams are currently undergoing very active training programmes," he added.
The president noted that the national Under-20 team was based at Munro College, in St Elizabeth while training for participation in the final round of the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup. The team commuted regularly to Kingston and other venues across the island for practice games. The national senior team, currently Lunar New Year Cup champions, while preparing for the championship and their friendly games against Switzerland and Panama, commuted regular from Clarendon, where they trained.
The Under-17 team, currently in preparation for the 2007 CONCACAF Under-17 final round qualification, set for the National Stadium, from today to May 6, travels daily between training venues, schools and players' residence.
The men's Under-23 team will begin training very shortly in preparation for the 2007 Pan Am Games from July 13 to 29, 2007, which will also qualify them for the 2008 Olympic Games. Participation in the Olympic Games will be will decisive in assessing the team's preparedness for World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
Petrojam's managing director Winston Watson revealed that in order to respond to the request for continued sponsorship of the JFF national football programme, the Petrojam board and management carefully reviewed the comprehensive approach being taken by the JFF to train the cadre of footballers in the national programme.
"I am pleased to see that a structured, long-term programme is now in place to train players, from the Under-17 squad to the senior team and that there is a programme of active game participation for exposure to international teams in competitions and tournaments at all levels. It also gives coaches good opportunity to observe players performance as they move through the various team levels," said the Petrojam managing director.
Watson noted that good football and particularly winning performances by the Reggae Boyz had the power to galvanise the entire country and that he was expecting that Petrojam's contribution to the JFF training programme would help the process of preparation for exciting games and success in the competitions. Several members of the national team, JFF officials and Petrojam's management team participated in the discussions and were presented for the refuelling of the Reggae Boyz Bus.
