Five coaches from Valencia FC of Spain will conduct the fourth staging of the Scotiabank Next Generation Sports Valencia Football Camp, July 4-8, at Sabina Park in Kingston.

The coaches are Alfredo Ramos, Jorge Manteca, Alberto Marrama, Joa Geixiera and Gonzalo Sanz. Marrama is a goalkeper coach.

"We see it as an important opportunity to continue to expose talents over the past three years with selected campers," André Virtue, technical director, Next Generation Valencia Club Football Camp, told the gathering at the media launch at Spanish Court hotel on Monday.

"The camp will impact the lives of kids and create opportunities for them. We are expecting about 160 young people. Football needs the support and we are expecting amazing returns. It requires some risk for us to step out, so thanks to all sponsors who support the programme," Virtue added.

The coaches will be conducting two camps, one for boys and girls, 7-11 years old, during the early session, 9 a.m. to noon, and the other for kids 12-15, from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

The camps will focus on ball possession, space management, transition (offensive and defensive), game intelligence, goalkeeping and Valencia CF Academy training models and examples.

    JFF boss pleased

President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, said his organisation fully supports this development.

"I have heard talks in recent times that football is not being developed here. I am very satisfied and pleased to see how things are going.

"Our grassroots programme is going well. Jamaica football is alive and well. The programme is on track. I must commend the organisers of this programme as it is responsible for the exposure of talents to Spain. This initiative that started three years ago has done well for the youngsters," the JFF boss said.

Simone Walker, Scotiabank's director of marketing programmes, pledged her company's support to the programme and handed over a cheque worth $2 million.

"We are pleased to be sponsor again this year. We are excited about the programme as the youngsters and parents are looking forward to the event this week.

"ScotiaBank is proud to partner with other stakeholders in moulding the youngsters," Walker pointed out.

Celsa Nuño Garcia, ambassador of Spain, said: "We have seen the Valencia coaches coming back because they are pleased with the talents here. The camp has been successful over the years. We will be sponsoring children from inner-city communities to participate in the five-day camp. Some parents have it hard, so we will assist. I know the children are really looking forward to the camp."

Member of parliament for Eastern St Andrew, Andre Hylton, who represented Natalie Headley-Neita, minister without portfolio with responsibility for sports, said the government is fully supportive of this programme.

Also present were Martin Davis and Lucas Levee, scholarship winners at the first camp three years ago. Davis played in the Villareal Youth Cup competition in Spain. Levee is training with Hurracan Valencia in Spain.

Other sponsors are Spanish Court hotel, Gatorade, Jamaica Producers and Main Event.

THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Whitmore For 'Age-Group' Team - Burrell

    Whitmore
    Marc Stamp, Gleaner Writer

Former men's national senior team football head coach, Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore, could be appointed to one of the national age-group teams' coaching staff, following his resignation from the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) last month.

President of the JFF, Captain Horace Burrell, disclosed that Whitmore could be back in the programme.

"We have always wished 'Tappa' Whitmore well and we'll continue to wish him well. Let me hasten to tell you that with the type of work that Whitmore has done and the experience and exposure that he gained over the several years (as head coach of the senior team), we don't intend to have all that thrown aside," Burrell told The Gleaner on Monday.

"I know the technical committee is looking at the possibility of retaining Mr Whitmore to be involved in probably one of the lower age-group teams," the JFF boss said.

    REASSIGNMENT DEFINITE

"You should not cast aside experience, especially when people are at a fairly young age; people who have played and understand what top-level football is," he added.

"I say Mr Whitmore should take heart and be allowed a little time to elapse because I am sure he will be back in the national programme, not at the senior level, but one of the age-group teams," Burrell stated confidently.

Whitmore resigned after the Reggae Boyz went down 2-0 in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualification to Honduras in Tegulcigalpa on June 12. That was Jamaica's fourth consecutive defeat in the Hexagonal stage and with Jamaica rooted at the bottom of the six-nation points standing on two points after six games, Whitmore was asked to resign by Captain Burrell after a meeting.

"We should move on and have Theodore Whitmore assigned to another national team," Burrell declared.

Efforts to contact Whitmore for a comment proved futile, as his mobile phone went unanswered several times, and messages were not responded to.
