Altidore goal lifts U.S. to 3rd straight win

No amount of tight defense could keep Jozy Altidore from doing what he does best.

Altidore has been money in scoring timely goals for the U.S. national team this spring. Honduras made a concerted effort to keep him in check, but the American forward still put himself in the highlight reel again.

Altidore scored a goal in his fourth consecutive international match, enough for the United States to edge Honduras 1-0 in a World Cup qualifying game Tuesday night.

U.S. riding high thanks to Altidore fulfilling his awesome potential

Jurgen Klinsmann is without a doubt the first coach in the history of the U.S. men's national team who uses the word "awesome" in press conferences. In fact, the West Coast transplant would be perfect for a cameo role in that Saturday Night Live skit "The Californians." Consider Klinsmann's take on Jozy Altidore, who tied a U.S. men's record by scoring in his fourth straight game in Tuesday's 1-0 win against Honduras.

"It's not only that he scored those goals," Klinsmann said. "The work that he does for the team is awesome."

You know what? The coach is right. The U.S. is as little as one game away from clinching a berth in World Cup 2014, not least because Altidore, has started fulfilling the potential he showed when he scored against Spain in the Confederations Cup four years ago. At the time, it was probably too soon for anyone to anoint Altidore as the next great U.S. center-forward. His up-and-down club performance proved that.

        The next great center-forward?
Please remind me of the great center-forwards or center-forwards who played for the USA?

...and if that poses a problem please name any USA player of the past or of the present who can be termed great as for the life of me I cannot think of even one?

It's interesting how some elements in the US media and their "soccer" fans have a desperate need to fabricate greatness in their generally well prepared but average players..... very amusing attempt at media manipulation

I would think they mean great relative to the players they have produced over time.

By US standards, Wynalda and McBride were "great" center forwards.

The only players they had who I would think could be considered great by their play in International competition (not club level) were the Goalkeepers. Only possible outfield players are Ramos, Donovan and now Dempsey.

How could you omit the great Preki from your list.

Unfortunately the US National team did not get very much of him at his best. A couple very good goals (4 goals in total).

Yes, and it's clearly written that way in the article: "the next great U.S. center-forward"

But I guess if Karl had quoted it accurately then he wouldn't have been able to put forth his strawman argument very well...
