    Mattocks Scores Again For Whitecaps
    Published: Monday | May 13, 2013 0 Comments

    Marc Stamp, Gleaner Writer

Jamaican international Darren Mattocks scored his second goal for Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the Major League Soccer 2012-13 season last Saturday in a 3-1 win over LA Galaxy at B P Palace.

Mattocks ended a miserable drought by scoring in stoppage time to seal the win for the Whitecaps.

"Well, I definitely feel good to know that it has been about four or five games since my first goal of the season. I have been playing well, so it's good to know that I have scored," Mattocks told The Gleaner, when contacted in Vancouver yesterday.

"This was a huge victory for the club as we are now looking forward to the Amway Canadian Championship first leg final against Montreal Impact on May 15," he added.

Canadian Russell Teibert scored his first two professional goals for Vancouver Whitecaps who hadn't won an MLS match since March 9 prior to the breakthrough on Saturday. Teibert opened the scoring on 63 minutes, lifting a left-footed strike from outside the area past a fully outstretched Carlo Cudicio in the bottom left corner.

The 20 year-old Teibert doubled Vancouver's lead on 76 minutes, smashing home a ball teed up to him by Geshon Koffie in the box. In the 86th minute, the Galaxy team got a goal back through Gyosi Zardes, who headed home a Joe Villareal cross.

Mattocks hopes that he will continue to score many goals and lift his club in the MLS Western Conference as well as to win the Amway Canadian Championship. The out-of-favour Reggae Boy also said that he is ready for action if selected for Jamaica's upcoming return game against Mexico in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers final phase on June 4 at the National Stadium here.

Mattocks, who has not played for Jamaica since the semi-final stage said he is ready when needed.

The 22-year-old Mattocks spent two years at Akon University then was drafted to the MLS last year and scored seven goals for his club in his rookie season. He has played five times for Jamaica at the senior level and is yet to score since making his debut against El Salvador in 2011.

      Why his drought for Jamaica?

He was very poor until that goal. I think the coach left him in the game hoping that he would get a goal and regain his confidence.

Him bettah step up cause mi haff mi money pon him. Mi haff a 97% accuracy when mi call out players (an elite list). Matter of fact it's goal similar to that he scored last season that drew my attention to him. He just banged it in without looking at the goal and stat celebrating (off a cross). He is yet to top that wonder goal that he started with this season. Dis yute ah go far.

Mattocks natural physical ability is off the charts..

He attacked that ball with a quickness.. did not wait for it..

I hope he finds an opportunity to maximize them..

No, meaning he was very poor in the game prior to scoring the goal at the end of the game.

Also, he was uncharacteristically poor in front of goal prior to getting benched and in his substitute appearances, but that may be largely due to the silly coach and Reo coker messing with his head.

Passing, shooting and movement. Later in the game the movement was better and looked like his typical movement into channels. Not sure what has happened with his shooting but he has been scuffing quite a few recently. Could be the crappy Vancouver turf. His passing looked like a player who was second guessing himself and not the typical overconfident Mattocks that I have been accustomed to seeing who makes his decision and passes in one moment.

Reo-Coker was always over-rated and has always been a disruptive force in any team. These Yanks, like us Jamaicans, have always been impressed with the English accents and think ordinary English players are better than they actually are.
Hey .. look at the bright side .... at least you're not a Liverpool fan! - Lazie 2/24/10 Paul Marin -19 is one thing, 20 is a whole other matter. It gets even worse if they win the UCL. *groan*. 05/18/2011.MU fans naah cough, but all a unuh a vomit?-Lazie 1/11/2015
