Rodgers aiming for top four finish next season
By This Is Anfield on May 10, 2013
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says that the aim next season is to finish in the top four “absolutely”.
Rodgers was speaking ahead of the final away game of his first season in charge of the club, against Fulham on Sunday.
“My focus is to try to close the gap” he explained. “We are bridging that gap slowly this year but hopefully we will take a bigger stride next year.
“But the reality is very simple: we are 30 points behind the leaders and 12 points behind fourth place so we have a lot of work to do here.”
Last season, Liverpool ended the campaign 17 points off fourth place which resulted in Kenny Dalglish being sacked.
Rodgers said “We know it is a long road but we don’t like being second-best and being behind. We don’t start the season aiming to finish fourth. The aim is always to win the title.
“A club of this status that is the ultimate objective – but you have to be realistic.”
Speaking of summer targets, he added “It is out job in the summer to get the right type of players to get us back into the top four.”
Rodgers also commented on reports linking Pepe Reina with a move to Barcelona, saying “Pepe’s not for sale. He has 3 more years. The speculation isn’t worth talking about”.
Meanwhile, the Reds boss confirmed that Jamie Carragher will captain the side in his final two appearances for the club following Steven Gerrard’s shoulder operation. “Since he’s come in he’s been arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League.”
