I seem to remember all of their players going abroad; you'd have to go back to Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole to find a Manu** striker of any worth going to another prem club. So the point is, it is not like Wenger didn't know this. He went for the highest £ he could get for RvP and held his breath, only to have it turn him blue.
