  • Big SidEEE!!! Big Boss!!! David Dein leaves Arsenal

    Ohhhh boyeeee

    Dein leaves Arsenal immediately

    April 19, 2007

VICE-CHAIRMAN David Dein has left Arsenal after clashing with the rest of the board.

Gunners chairman Peter Hill-Wood revealed Dein has exited immediately due to "irreconcilable differences".

Dein has long been one of the most powerful boardroom men in the Premiership.

He used to be the Football Association vice-chairman and is now the chairman of the G14 group - containing Europe's biggest clubs.

But Dein's fellow Arsenal board members disagree with his apparent sympathy for a possible takeover bid from billionaire Stan Kroenke.

The American businessman has bought 9.9 per cent of the club, plus more shares from major stakeholder Danny Fiszman.

But Hill-Wood has always played down takeover talk.

And the rest of the club's board, who own 45.45 per cent of the shares, have agreed to keep their shares for at least 12 months.

Hill-Wood said: "On behalf of the board I would like to express our gratitude to David Dein for the many years of loyal service he has given to the club.

"We sincerely regret that irreconcilable differences between Mr Dein and the rest of the board have necessitated a parting of the ways."

Ex-Gunners manager George Graham said: "I can't believe David Dein has gone. It's amazing news.

"I can't believe he's resigned from the board of directors. Maybe he's been pushed.

"He's been the main figurehead of the club. He's been instrumental in the club's success.

"He was the man who brought Arsene Wenger to the club."

I hope it doesnt affect Arsene Wenger's view, and he is

solidly behind the Big SidEEE!!! campaign to dominate World Football next year and beyond.
The Super players he has are ready.
Just 2 players needed Robinho or to a lesser extent Scarface and Mort Gamst.

If Gallas leaves then we need a ROCK solid defender with experience.

Dein has kept hold of his 14.5 per cent shareholding for the moment, though the intriguing possibility remains that he could sell to Kroenke and force a hostile takeover bid. Arsenal fans will also be concerned about the futures of Arsène Wenger and Thierry Henry, both of whom were brought to the club by Dein and are extremely close to him.

Wenger has only one year remaining on his present contract and talks have yet to begin over an extension. Henry signed a new deal last summer but his closeness to the outgoing vice-chairman is shown by the fact that the contract was negotiated by Dein’s agent son, Darren, who was also the best man at his wedding.

Dein has insisted privately that he was not looking to take Arsenal into foreign ownership, though it is clear that he and the board hold different views as to how to take the club forward. Dein has been frustrated by their inability to compete with Chelsea in the transfer market, memorably noting that Roman Abramovich’s tanks were firing £50 notes at them, and appears to have concluded that bringing in greater investment was the only solution.

Although Fiszman recently sold 659 shares to Kroenke, the rest of the board clearly disagreed as they seek to preserve Arsenal as an august English institution, leading to yesterday’s split. In an interview published yesterday it was significant that Peter Hill-Wood, the chairman, said that all of the club’s other major shareholders — Fizsman, Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith and the Richard Carr family — were unwilling to sell. Dein was not mentioned.

The matter came to a head at a heated board meeting yesterday, leading to the announcement of Dein’s departure and a pledge that the remaining board members would not trade shares for 12 months.

“In light of recent speculation with regards to the ownership of the club, the remaining board members, who together own 45.45% of the issued share capital of the company, would like to reassure the supporters, shareholders and employees of Arsenal Football Club that they remain long-term holders of their interests in the club,” a statement read. “To this effect, they have entered into an agreement not to dispose of their shares for at least one year and have confirmed that they intend to retain their interests on the expiration of this period.”

Hill-Wood praised Dein’s involvement with Arsenal, which began in 1983, though in truth the board has been split for some time. Dein was opposed to the site of the club’s new stadium at Ashburton Grove, while recently Fizsman and Keith Edelman, the managing director, were unimpressed by his handling of the Ashley Cole tapping-up affair, blaming him for the England defender’s departure to Chelsea.

Wenger was said to be stunned when told of Dein’s departure, while George Graham expressed his shock. “I’m amazed and can’t believe he would resign his position on the board,” the former manager said. “You wonder if he’s been pushed.”
