  • Xavi the pass master

Xavi makes history by completing 96 passes out of 96 (yes, that's 100%!)

It wasn't a perfect team performance from Barcelona, but Xavi enjoyed an remarkable evening: completing a staggering 100 per cent of his 96 passes in the match with Paris St Germain.

The Catalan giants were made to sweat on their place in the Champions League semi-finals, they went behind after 50 minutes and only secured safe passage into the next round on away goals courtesy of Pedro's 71st-minute strike.

Unblemished record: Xavi found an team-mate with every pass against Paris St Germain

Many will point to the introduction of talisman Lionel Messi midway through the second-half as the key to the club's much-improved fortunes, but it was Xavi who produced an immaculate midfield masterclass.

All smiles: Xavi savours success at the Nou Camp with team-mate Andres Iniesta

The Spaniard, 33, came close to opening the scoring just minutes into the match with a deft free-kick which brushed the side netting - many in the stadium believed he had scored.

He played the full 90 minutes of the match and found a team-mate with each of his passes - a feat matched by others in the last 10 years - but no one has managed it on such a scale.
Xavi's efforts topped the 100 per cent performance from Javier Zanetti against Tottenham three years ago and Arsenal cult hero Emmanuel Eboue is third on the list.

But while the Spaniard managed nearly 100 completed passes, Zanetti and Eboue made 72 and 54 successful passes respectively in their matches.

It's understandable a player of Cristiano Ronaldo's ability should feature on the list, but, remarkably, so does Chelsea defender John Terry for his impeccable performance against Werder Bremen in the 2008 competition.

Catch him if you can: Xavi was instrumental in Barca's progress into the semi-finals of the Champions League

Spain is truly blessed to have Xavi and Iniesta.
He was always deemed the best now we have concrete proof he is.
        Old guys distinguishing themselves.

          Excellent!
It was a very enthralling match! PSG is a very good TEAM! ...Barcelona was Barcelona.

In the context of Barcelona's class - Cesc was wasteful! ...and so were the PSG forwards.

            Just to keep us all on the straight and narrow path of reality;

Xavier in 340 matches in all competitions since 07/08 season for Club and country has scored 61 goals and 100 assists in top flight competition. That is a goal producing event of 47 percent every game this guy plays.

We can't even get one guy in our league playing in the midfield to come close to that level of effectiveness even in the RSPL.

We have a very long way to go, we don't even track assists in the Rspl.

              ...as quick thinking?
              ...as mobile?
              ...scores as does Xavi?
              ...as many killer passes?

              ...AS GOOD DEFENSIVELY?
              ...AS FAST AS Xavi?

Damn? ...anywhere near Xavi's quality of play?
              I do not think so!

Yet...I think 2nd best we have to Xavi. Keammar Daley is 1st!
Both should be in our squad!!!!

...while as we go forward Daley can drop into his familiar mid-field role at this time he could be, as could Maestro, be tried as forward. ...perhaps coming on when a "Teddy" Johnson tires? ...last 30 minutes or thereabouts?

Playing so far forward and coming on when the majority of opponents have burned great energy...could have them less far behind on pace as movement also would compensate? I would l would gamble on it...certainly we need goals!!!!

Ha ha! You have no clue! Only you and Keammar's mother might think he's better than Maestro.

Time for a visit to Jamaica, Karl. Five matches left to witness Maestro in flight!

Which part of Xavi fast!? Across ground, I hasten to add!

True! We do have a long way to go. But not tracking assists don't mean they don't exist!

Also, how do you judge an excellent quarterback who has poor receivers?
