The tag line for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 is looking more and more prophetic with every passing month. "It's gonna' be huge!" is no longer merely a hopeful slogan but more a matter of plain fact. After hitting the half-a-million mark back in early march, the Local Organising Committee has now announced that advanced ticket sales for the competition have soared past 600,000 for the six venues across the country.
The U-20 finals are poised to become the single biggest sporting event in the history of the North American nation.
"The hunger for tickets and growing anticipation truly demonstrates the love of the beautiful game in Canada," remarked FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter. "Canadians know they are in for a treat this summer and that nothing but spectacular football will be on display when the world's top youngsters battle for the crown of becoming world champion."
Just one month on from the gala Official Draw in Toronto, demand for tickets continues to rocket. Within 24 hours of the nationally televised pairings, an additional 15,000 ticket packages were sold. And in the week that followed the Draw - which drew such notables of world football and Canadian sport as FIFA World Cup winning coach Luiz 'Big Phil' Scolari, Archie Gemmill, former PSG great Julio Dely Valdes and former athletics world record holder Donovan Bailey - an additional 70,000 packages were snatched up.
"The Local Canadian team should be very proud of their organisation of the Official Draw event," praised FIFA vice-president and chairman of the Organising Committee Jack Warner at the committee's 19 March meeting at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland. "Now that all of the pieces are in place, we can all look forward to an exiting tournament this summer."
"The anticipation surrounding the tournament has been tremendous," said local event director Peter Montopoli. "Canadian fans have shown that there is a real thirst for championship football in this country."
The 16th instalment of the 30-year-old U-20 world showpiece will take place across 3000 miles of land from Victoria, Vancouver Island on the Pacific coast to picturesque Montreal in the East. Canada will be the second-largest country ever to host a FIFA U-20 World Cup. The Soviet Union, hosts in 1985, holds the distinction of being the largest.
