  • That was embarrassing...

How many attempts from inside the 18 with numbers is required to score against Barbados...

How is that Academy coming along.. well I hope..

    Dem almost lose to Barbados...

Some of the passing accuracy was beyond pathetic.. all the time in the world, no pressure.. set.. look pon dem teamate and pass DIRECTLY to the opponent 3 yards off their teamate..

The Defensive capabilities of the Center half dem is ridiculous.. overunning balls.. basically taking themselves out of play allow the Bajan forward to easily win challenges.. man dem a bruk demselves.. not once.. not twice but several times..

    Wow.. future look dark...

No! The potential could be clearly seen.

...and they have been attending the schools run by poor teachers! Matters not if they are now in classrooms outside of Jamaica.

...it could be said, "it is the teachers!"

btw - Did Martin Davis play?
        Just asking!

It was embarrassing on many levels, the two that stand out for me were: 1) technical inadequacy and 2) tactical naivite. I was absolutely stunned at how simplistic Downswell's approach to that game was - it was the same thing over and over again: ball from back to wide player at the half way line, back to middle in center circle, straight up the gut after that. The little fellow Jones and the other winger on the right were totally unused. They only got the ball when pressure built up and they were the only outlet. Time and time again, we had the left and right sides open deep...but no delivery into the deep wide areas. And don't start me on the pathetic long balls that resulted only in turning the ball over to the Bajans. It was rather remarkable and simultaneously unremarkable. If the reason we did not go deep and wide was that we have no one who can cross the ball, then that supports #1 above. And while we're on the matter of technical ability, Bryan and Flemmings will kick themselves when they see the replays. Poor technical ability, poor finishing and tactical stupidity all in one tidy package. ~sigh. Nuff respect to our keeper, Nelson, he was our MOTM for my money.

Even at the all local senior level, Barbados is a better team than Jamaica.

Stoni: Do not fall into the broad painting of "not having players who can cross the ball". It is a term used by commentators to get across a point of view that has only to do with passing in the air. It, I believe, comes out of the English background from days of kick and run football...that is today still embraced by Tony Pulis of Stoke and which was not too long past was embraced by Sam Allardyce +(Bolton and his early days at West Ham).

Crosses - Arise out of kicking technique. Anyone can consistently cross a ball well in all the ways crosses are (can be) made...only if kicking technique is 'good'!

Poor kicking technique and the ball will never be consistently crossed well!

Draw leaves U-17s sweating on final result

                Published: Tuesday | April 9, 2013

Jamaica will have to await the result of the Group A encounter between Panama and Barbados in the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship tomorrow in Panama to determine whether they advance to the quarter-final stage.

The Wendell Downswell-coached young Reggae Boyz battled to a 2-2 draw against Caribbean team Barbados to complete their fixture in the group yesterday. Jamaica lead the group on two points, ahead of Barbados and host Panama on one point apiece.

With the top two teams advancing from the group, the Panama-Barbados game will be crucial as all three teams are in with a chance. A win for either team in that game will see Jamaica qualifying in second place. However, a draw with more than four goals will see the Jamaicans heading home.

In the game yesterday, Jamaica went ahead when striker Rafique Bryan scored in the eighth minute. Barbados levelled courtesy of a goal by Shaquille Boyce 10 minutes later. Jamaica led again when captain Junior Flemmings netted from the penalty spot in the 39th minute.

The Barbadians fought back and equalised through Shakille Belle in the 55th minute.

Two days earlier, Jamaica, which ended the game with nine players, were held to a 1-1 draw by Panama in their opening match

Flemmings put Jamaica ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute, but in the dying moments of the match, Miliciades Molina scored to earn a point for the hosts.

Jamaica played that match with 10 men for much of the second half as Ryan Miller was shown a red card in the 68th minute. Then they went down to nine in injury time when Tyshan Hill was ejected.

Playing before their home supporters, Panama went on the attack from the opening whistle. In the first minute, Luis Zuniga tried an overhead kick which went very close. In the 25th minute, Panama went close again when a shot from Ismael Diaz from inside the Jamaican box was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Nicholas Nelson.

Panama would regret that miss 15 minutes later as Junior Flemmings netted from the penalty spot to give Jamaica a 1-0 lead after Michael Seaton was taken down in the box by Felix General.

The Panamanians were again early on the attack in the second half and Ismael Diaz should have equalised in the 54th minute, but Nelson made another tremendous save.

SANJAY MYERS With the U-17 REGGAE BOYZ @ THE CONCACAF WORLD CUP PLAY-OFFS IN PANAMA

                  Tuesday, April 09, 2013

CHORRERA, Panama — Jamaica are all but assured of a place in the quarter-final stage of the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, despite twice giving up the lead in a 2-2 result against Caribbean rivals Barbados at the Estadio Muquita Sanchez yesterday.

Raffique Bryan opened the scoring for the Young Reggae Boyz with a deft lob in the seventh minute, but the speedy Shaquille Boyce pulled Barbados level with a fine finish 10 minutes later.

Jamaica captain Junior Flemmings (37th minute) notched his second goal of the tournament — both penalties — to restore the advantage heading into the half-time interval.

However, a mere 10 minutes into the second period, the plucky Bajans emphasised their fighting spirit when Shakille Belle booted in the equaliser from close range, after reacting quickest to a header off the cRossbar.

The Jamaicans have two points from as many matches to lead Group A — after previously drawing with hosts Panama.

Barbados and Panama, who play each other tomorrow, follow with a point each.

A victory for either will see Jamaica advance to the quarter-final as the second-placed team from the group. A draw, which would leave all three teams locked on two points, could also put the Jamaicans through.

Only the top two countries from each group will progress to the quarter-final stage.

The four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be staged in the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 8.
