    Building on the 4-5-1

Watching the game Friday it became very evident quickly that we were losing the first and most fundamental battle, the engagement of the front lines and control of the field, the battle of the midfield.

In the Mexico game it was about defense, survival of the Azteca and being able to potentially counter without too much commitment in the attack. The panama game we had an opponent that is a real rival that is built like us and play well together, more than half their team play in the local league and probably most if not all the rest came out of the local league, they all know and play that panama physical, fast game with good passing combinations.

We went into the game with 4-4-2 with Austin and elliott more defensive style players and from there it was not very clear what jobi and mcleary could do with two strikers at top and no clear fulcrum point in the 4-4-2.

I am advocating a commitment to the 4-5-1 across Jamaican ball with the base of that pyramid being, stay home defenders, two defensive mids, a central attacking midfielder, two flank mids on either side of the attacking mid and one forward, we literally build a pentagon shape in midfield into attack, with the attacking mid at the center of the pentagon which is full of triangles for option passing and with five in midfield, at least you have a chance to win the first battle, control of the game, control of the rhythm of the game, imposing of will etc. panama committed more to the attack and into midfield that we did, every time you are outmanned in the critical area of battle you will typically cede ground whether in football or combat.

With a focus on developing 4-5-1 we will have better structure with all our players understanding roles and developing a mastery of types of players needed to play such roles.

The first task is developing a mastery in defense, creating an impregnable fortress in the back, that comes with developing excellent wing backs committed to defense first and with potential to attack if necessary and only if instructed to do so at certain times with role changes necessary to keep the fundamental fortress principle in place. Another Sub task here is developing the role of defensive midfielders who are excellent passers even potentially being able to initiate the attack by swapping out with the attacking mid to create variation in attack and bring in the element of surprise, but fundamentally the defensive mid has at his first strength high defensive aptitude, hawkish and excellent passing skills and aptitude.

The attacking mid is a tough role, but here we are looking for speed of thought, speed of decision, excellent passer with vision, fast and strong with a low center of gravity, almost impossible to create, they have to be born and developed, think Maradona, in lieu of that we will take quick thinker good passing skills with speed and a leader on the field. The two flank mids , fast, skilled, can play defense well and can switch out with wing back on occasion or play forward if necessary, that is a tough combination but that is what is necessary in order to build the kind of longevity approach needed in our ball, this is continually missing as we seek to emulate the latest top team in the world with each succeeding new crop of ballers, Brazilian, Spanish, Argentinian, German, Dutch etc etc, much like how our politicians cannot stick to a fundamental model of economic development based around export led and import substitution, which has at its core earning more hard currency, limiting the use of hard currency to just capital improvement, but no go with the latest fad, liberalization of markets in an underdeveloped country with a clear addiction to nonlocal goods which leads to a severe dependence in every sector of the local economy and thus every shudder outside your economy rocks the local economy to the undercarriage, etc etc, same in football stick to one fundamental philosophy that maximizes speed, strength and skill each of which we have good competence in but never able to maximize that with an understanding of what we do and How we do it. Combining those things with a commitment to process makes for a very durable competitive product.

We do not understand or comprehend how to simply move the ball under pressure
When under pressure you cannot rely solely on instinct and trying to do the right thing you must be able to execute the responses to heavy pressure or control by the other team by responding with counter tactics developed in practice, changing the formation, changing the roles, consolidating the play into midfield.

Two forwards at top when you are outgunned in the middle makes no sense you are wasting resources and you can't get to them anyway except through long ball so pull one back, fight the battle in the middle first. So 4-5-1 is the base, when facing inferior opposition that can quickly be changed to 4-3-3 with the right players at mid flank can be moved into straight attack or 4-4-2 if you are already winning the midfield battle push a man up, but always start 4-5-1 that is the formation of greatest strength at the start of the game when you don't know the opponent and you want to at least gain dominance in midfield or if the opponent is superior being able to clog the lanes like in the Mexico match.

Build on that basic framework, developing the player types to fit into that framework and develop the strategies and tactics to support changing formation and thus player roles to create the element of surprise in the attack.

What I see is we are developing a lot of attacking midfielders who cannot make the cut outside of the yard teams, somehow that position has developed into being equal to cool, deliberative, slow, tie your shoelace with untouchable ball at foot, matador style player but strong skill/vision element to it, in the pros this gets killed, they have to be two way players, with speed, vision and skillet the same time. We are not developing a slew of defensive midfielders who are also good passing and on the attack so we have Austin and then fall off to Morrison and that is it paying pro ball.

We must develop players to fit the schemes and guide payers into the right areas with the proper focus on what makes it work in the pro leagues as at the end of the day that is the ultimate objective for Jamaican ballers export, export, export, if doe in all positions within a local framework when comes time to pay international ball they are just practiced pieces fitting into an old and tried framework.

Developing? Hue played no part in our last 2 games, besides him we have no one else on the team to fill that void, so seeing that you pointed out a need for a creative midfielder, whom do you recommend ?

        Nice piece for local development.
The local coaches could do worse.

Stoni has of course hit on the understated - Our local coaches are not living up to their responsibilities.

Going along with what Stoni writes above are good teaching and good development of technical skills - "getting the ball to do the player's bidding" ....good movement and passing (inclusive of passing into goal i.e. shooting/goal-scoring!).

...also then when players are to be culled from earlier ages through to national teams, there is need for a cadre of good scouts=individual who know 'the game' and 'the skill set needed' to 'live' with what holds at the highest international levels.

It could be that we have a chicken and egg situation. Teachers not knowing skills needed - (and knowledge of how to teach same <-----> and scouts who have not a clue on what is needed in a quality 'balla'?

This is where the bone of the contention is I think with many, I really don't believe in the magic pill thing, we really don't have the guy that meets the criteria and I have a hard time putting someone in that position that is not fast, not combative and doesn't naturally react on defense. I personally would like to see Jobi play the role, but after seeing him now three times I am not so sure, my thought is run it by committee, to me it is more important to clog the hole in the middle on defense and the drop off on the attack side from hue to whoever is not so massive a fall because of his liabilities on the d side. Just my thought, that is all, just like you have yours.

Thats what you need to address and stop dancing around with 4-5-1 or any formation , you rule out Mc Nuff after 3 games ? but admit in your 4-5-1 the creative midfielder is your bone of contention ? You know that packing your midfield with 5 midfielders , two you use as wingers and the other 3 are still defensive midfielders leaves us back to where we started .The opposition will will put pressure in that vacum and the end result will be no different than it is now , cards and a collapse in the middle , the secret is out in concacaf ....PUT PRESSURE ON THE MIDDLE to accumulate cards AND PUSH US TO THE WINGS AND LOCK US DOWN.....cc Panama..cc C. Rica .

Bone of contention ? You know a creative midfielder takes pressure off the defensive midfielers/defence /team to org , itself and put pressure on the opposition,we dont have that now , hence we look disjointed and to quote you lackadasical.

runnn haaarrrddd ! and bench HUE !

I think the concept...the actual strategy being employed is working. We are creating chances.

Chances are being created from different points of attack, for example -
...through the middle - Beckford's & Shelton's misses, Austin's long range bomb. ...from
... crosses from both wings - 2 free-kicks wide (which we never capitalized on), and the cross that created Demar Philips' miss (missed header) from the penalty-spot, Jermaine Taylor's miss deep in the penalty-area (7 or 8 yards out - a header) from Demar Philips' excellent free-kick from some 35 - 40 yards out. ...besides there were additional good buildups and attacks where it was final delivery of good quality cross being the problem *(Doyley, JJ, McCreary, McAnnuff, Demar Philips and Elliot being the culprits).

We are increasingly making it more and more difficult for our opponents to come down the middle. ...as Stoni says...it is a midfield by committee.

That "midfield by committee" in and of itself has multiple advantages. It demands of the opponents 'honesty' as it could relate to shutting down any so called one creative midfielder. - Isn't this not what the braying is on about...a one-man "creative" midfielder?

In the last game - both goals were scored from defensive lapses by our defenders on the opponent's attacking wide left...i.e. our right defense area!!!

*Do not expect every one of our crosses to be top quality...but I do think we could have gotten a few more 'right' as we broke free and created for selves time and space to put in telling crosses.

Please also do not use the above to conclude that I am saying those players did not contribute to our cause. ...but rather just some facts on what occurred in the match.

Not my bone, more your bone, I am not ruling him out but I am less happy with him.

I am advocating an attacking midfielder like you, I am just saying he can't be slow and he cannot be weak defensively, is that so bad?

Hue is not the answer and to try to put all of this on his back as the solution would be a massive mistake. Truthfully the one thing I see with mcanuff that I am not leased with is more about possible character issue, I absolutely detest players that flop, it really burns me up and I have seen him do it a few times now, it may e nothing to you or to most people but it mean something to me.

Stoni you know and I know the 1st line of defence is an offence ( as long as the opposition doesnt have the ball ) if you can admit Hue has offensive qualities that we need , then he is a defensive assest , the question then becomes how to shore up any liabilities he has when we dont have the ball, we have 2 defensive midfielders than can more than cover that.

Common sense STONI ! Yuh ead nuh suh tuff .

It tuff man, I believe the opposite that a strong defense sets the table for a strong team over the long run, excellent offense is very hard to create. It is easier for us to approximate Patrice Evra than it is to approximate players like messi and Ronaldo. That is really the key to it, we just don't have the players to play excellent offense, aye against Antigua or Guatemala, but not against these sides in the hex or better, but we can compete with the big boys having a tough defense and frustrating their attack, and with right players on counter you can win a few matches. Truth is to really get what you want needs some serious time, investment, caches and an entire system geared at improving every single thing we think we know about football.

1st of all I agree with ,any teams foundation must be its defence , 2nd i disagree with you that we dont have offensive capabilities to compete in concacaf.Seperate the two issues and stop clouding it as you usually do .

I will keep saying it , our brightest spark over those games was our defence , it came under immense pressure , and that includes our defensive midfielders, asking a central figure like Austin to be a creative midfielder will create a vacum that will be exploited by any opposition,If I was the opposing coach my instructions would be to take him/them out of the game ,by cards or pressure in numbers or both.

On to your philosiphical point ..but we can compete with the big boys having a tough defense and frustrating their attack, and with right players on counter you can win a few matches.

We have that strong defence , where is the players for the counter attack? we have employed your theory of getting these oveseas pros who run harrd , but lack that counter attacking ability, again what /whom do you propose to fix this ?

You set up your defence , from a holistic scenario , where its based on defenders and defensive midfielders who can counter attack ? you absolve the creative part by brushing over it as saying we lack them so lets build on defence ? WE HAVE A DEFENCE , as good as any in concacaf , dont blame the defence and scapegoat the middle , deal with the middle !

That defence took us to this round, drew with MEX and PAN and collapsed vs C. Rica , why ?

Are we to run to england again ? Panama drew & C. Rica beat us with 3 players a piece from their respective bush leagues , one scored a goal , you could argue 2 because the other C. Rica just left the league in feb/march.
