As evidence by film footage.. after Mattocks cut inside his defender, Erik Hurtado was in an offside position.
Mattocks decision was correct and can be faulted for not directing the ball such that the keeper could not save with his foot..
Everything about that play up to that point was excellent.
2 Defenders racing back with 2 attackers.. defenders are fairly well positioned and on pace.. The forward with the ball maintains possession with the objective of at some point drawing both defenders to him and making the goal keeper commit.. when this occurs the forward cuts in to allow for a 'easy' passing lane to the other forward OR a shot on goal in the event for example that the other forward is offside or otherwise incapacitated
And now for a word from the Coach
Coach Martin Rennie supported Mattocks’ decision to look off Hurtado and rather take the shot himself. He just wants to see more consistent finishing from the Jamaican.
“You don’t want to start telling your strikers not to shoot when they’re in the box,” said Rennie. “It’s just more being clinical on the finish.”
