Costa Rica asks FIFA for replay of US match

    Monday, March 25, 2013 | 8:05 AM

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) -- Costa Rica is asking soccer's governing body for a replay of Friday's World Cup qualifier against the United States, won 1-0 by the Americans during a snowstorm in Commerce City, Colorado.

Costa Rican Football Federation Treasurer Rolando Villalobos said in a statement Sunday that documentation had been sent to FIFA to back the claim, including photographs and videos.

The Costa Rican Federation said the climatic conditions threatened the physical integrity of the players, left the sidelines and markings on the field largely not visible and led to the entry onto the field of snow-clearing personnel, which it said was not permitted.

The Federation also argued that "ball movement became impossible given the quantity of snow on the field" and called on FIFA to punish the match officials who allowed the game to proceed.

"What happened the night of Friday the 22nd ... has no precedents, since it not only went against the sporting spectacle, but also against the physical integrity of the officials and players," the statement said.

During Friday's game, ploughs and shovels were used to clear the penalty areas, centre circle and midfield stripe as snow got heavier, and a yellow-and-purple ball was used.

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto urged the referee to suspend the game, but US coach Jurgen Klinsmann made a case for playing on because both teams faced the same conditions.

US captain Clint Dempsey scored in the 16th minute to lift his team to second place in the six-team CONCACAF region qualifying group after two matches.

Costa Rica is at the bottom of the group with one point.

The US Soccer Federation declined to comment Sunday night.

Didn't the ref consult them regarding abandoning the game and they said no? I heard the commentator applauding the Ticos unless he was misinformed.

The players shouldn't even have been consulted...the game should have been blown off by the match officials...

Even My wife a neutral observer thought the game was a farce

We couldn't believe when they reported that the Costa Ricans wanted the game to continue..

That is me standing with my back to the camera!!!

I must say that was the most awsome experience i have ever had watching a game of football.

Great decision by FIFA. The Costa Ricans wanted to play; and they played extremely well in the conditions.

Would i do it again? yes!!...but I would wear thicker socks and wear warmer boots!!
