ON a night when all the Reggae Boyz defenders stepped up their game to admirable levels, including captain and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, Watford's centre back Nyron 'Nuggsy' Nosworthy is the Jamaica Observer's star player.

Gillingham, where he is reported to have ran to training as part of his 'warm-up' exercises, despite living a considerable distance away -- had the unenviable task to shutting out Manchester United's striker, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, and Oribe Peralta of Santos Laguna.

Chicharito has one of the best goals per games ratio among modern players, scoring 24 in 33 games prior to Wednesday's CONCACAF World Cup Final Round Qualifier at the Estadio Azteca, while Peralta is one of the top strikers in Mexico, and the man famous for scoring both goals in his team's 2-1 victory over Brazil in the gold medal match at the London Olympics last summer.

Nuggsy and his central defensive partner and former clubmate Adrian Mariappa delivered big time, limiting the much-vaunted Mexico pair to few chances at Ricketts' goal.

Nuggsy, who has had English Premier League experience at Sunderland, first as a right wing back, then to central defence -- where he is reported to have said that the move helped his concentration and organisational skills -- needed all the experience gained over the years to ward off the marauding Mexicans, as Jamaica kept a clean sheet.

From the stands inside the gigantic Azteca, the site of two World Cup Finals (1970 and 1986), one could see Nuggsy and Mariappa in constant dialogue and gesticulation among themselves and teammates.

The organisational execution was superb, for the most part, and when he had to throw himself to block, he was alert, he was ready, and he was brave. The effort and commitment, it seems, became infectious, as his teammates joined in for the common goal of earning a satisfactory result.

"The game for us on a whole was a good game," Nuggsy told the Jamaica Observer at game's end. "We were fully concentrated and I think knowing who we were playing against made it that much better for us, because our concentration levels for the whole team from the front to the back was very good. So for us it was to make sure we keep them (forwards) pushed away from us for the first 15 to 20 minutes and see how it got on," he added.

Chicharito is famous for being a highly intelligent striker, who has an uncanny knack of finding spaces in-between and behind defenders, running off their shoulders and being calm and deadly inside the penalty box.

Well, on Wednesday he was restricted to just two shots, both blocked by a highly alert Ricketts, while Peralta was even less effective, forcing Ricketts into one save from a pile drive from an acute angle.

So for his organisational skills, his bravery, his tackling ability, his reading of the game, and his recovery rate, Nyron 'Nuggsy' Nosworthy, who won the 2006-7 Player of the Year Award for Sunderland is the Observer's Star Player of the Game.

Reggae Boyz captain Donovan Ricketts has called for calm and a reasoned approach as the nation savours its historic result against Mexico inside the Estadio Azteca on Wednesday night.

Ricketts, the 35-year-old veteran goalkeeper who was the third-string custodian at Jamaica's historic 1998 France World Cup Finals appearance, admitted that it was a good result in the much-feared environment, but he warned that it would all go to waste if the Reggae Boyz did not consolidate that result.

"It was a good point, but we just have to accept it as a good point on the road and don't look at the historical significance," he told the Jamaica Observer, while resting in his hotel room after the game.

"... because if we get a historical point here, and then we don't make it (qualify for the World Cup), it would be worthless. So we just take it as a point and move on and be ready for our next game. Because the ultimate goal is to get out in first, second or third place," added Ricketts, who now plies his trade with the Portland Timbers in the US Major League Soccer.

After being massively outplayed in five prior outings in Mexico — four at the Estadio Azteca and one at the Olympic Stadium — the Reggae Boyz stunned the near 35,000 spectators with a disciplined, committed, and feisty performance, which eventually evoked reluctant applause from the 'homesters', who dished out derisory boos for the home team.

The Reggae Boyz number one 'keeper, who last represented the nation in the opening game of the semi-final phase of the CONCACAF qualifiers last June against Guatemala, thought it was a good, tactical performance from his teammates.

"It was a good game, a very tough game, we had to do a lot of work defensively, but I think we defended well as a group, from the forwards to midfielders and back to defenders. So that's what it will take to get us in the top three," said the St James native, who helped the David Beckham-led Los Angeles Galaxy to the American title two seasons ago.

Ricketts, who was called on to save his team on at least five occasions, including a brave last minute challenge on Manchester United's frontman, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, was most impressed with the Boyz's defensive execution.

"Being solid defensively, because when you go on the road you want a point to go back home and defend, and tonight it was a good defensive performance and it's a good place to start," was his response.

The 1.93-metre Ricketts was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the team he has led since the mid-2000.

"Basically, you could say that with us coming together for a couple of days and players relatively new to each other, in that sense, it was a surprise; but with the quality we put on the field, we could always expect good things from them," he reasoned.

And he was most moved by the manner in which the new players acquitted themselves and integrated themselves in the group.

"I think everyone fitted right into the team; and it looked like everyone was playing together for a long time. No one looked new or out of place, so I thought it was a good performance.

"We have a lot of things to work on, but it's the start of something new and it looks good," Ricketts ended.

Can't help it ... that could the difference between a 95% and a 100% OR 45 % and 50%... having said that, the experience in the back is indeed a boost to the team's performance. Let's hope they will consistently bring that to the team as inspired defending can help the men in front. The writer said as much in that their effort was "infectious".

Nyron, he hasn't shown it as yet but he quite capable of spontaneously running at unbelievable speed over short distance;it is good regarding retracting.. and for offense too.
If a UB40 keeper was used for the Mexico game, and gave the same account..as Ricketts gave of himself, we probably would be talking how much of a breath of fresh air it is to have that keeper, Ricketts distinguished himself...
No player(defender) is infallible but we have a back line(keeper too) that can effectively marshall formidable strikers,Theo's headache and task have to be finding players that are worthy to be fielded..

You can't give enough credit to this yout for the game he played against Mexico.

I think he is better than nuff current premiership centerback.

                    Defending was such that

there was no need for any defensive substitution.

However we are not that deep there and we still have a problem scoring goals.
