The German FA (DFB) has banned second division club Dynamo Dresden from next year's DFB Pokal (German FA Cup) competition for fan violence at a second round match against big time club Hannover 96. Dynamo Dresden was supposed to be banned from this year's competition, but had the penalty reduced on appeal.

Hannover 96 won the game 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

DFB noted the large scale riots by Dresden fans outside the stadium, at the entrances, and at one point broke down the barrier and entered the field, but were pushed back by the police. Also, Dresden fans used widespread pyrotechnics, which are now banned in all German stadiums.

Hannover was fined 70,000 euros. Teams that advanced to the second round earned about 500,000 euros.

Ultras throughout Germany, the ones who do most of the singing and chanting, are protesting the pyrotechnics ban by remaining dead silent for the first 12 minutes and 12 seconds of each match.
