I believe that this is a critical area for the further success of our ballers that we must be able to identify and develop and that it is this that is responsible for the success or lack of success of many of our star ballers when making the jump to foreign leagues.
The four attributes of emotional intelligence are not mine I copied them from some website.
Emotional intelligence consists of four attributes:
1. Self-awareness – You recognize your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior, know your strengths and weaknesses, and have self-confidence.
This is critical to have, an ability to be aware of self, internal monitoring of where you are, Where you stand based on your performance, based on your goals for self, it is the first step in self improvement. This fundamental idea is missing or very weak in some of our players especially when making the jump from local league to a foreign league. There is a missing internal clock that cannot be reset or they just are not aware how to get to it.
2. Self-management – You’re able to control impulsive feelings and behaviors, manage your emotions in healthy ways, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.
Bottom line stuff this is ability to adapt to environment, if it cold then you become a master in your mind over cold and make those necessary adjustments, if the team, if you are unhappy with an issue address it first within to see is it a real issue, does it need to be addressed on another level or can I resolve it, communicate with key players if necessary and somehow try to address issue in a positive manner. Understand what the team really wants, what they saw in you and try to really focus on getting those two things to meet.
3. Social awareness – You can understand the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization.
Everybody needs somebody, there is always an opportunity to make somebody else feel better and with that you sink psychological hooks into the organization framework which in many instances can make an everyday player become an indispensable player within a team. How many time could Bolton have gotten rid of Gardner, (btw not saying he was everyday player) how many injuries where even i said look like him done and most people would have said ok, I don't know the details but clearly he had sunk some emotional hooks into every part of that organization from top to bottom over the years.
4. Relationship management – You know how to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.
Last but not least is longevity, sustenance and feeding of relationships, that is the key to true success and goes beyond talent, so while the payer might produce well and has ridiculous talent his relationship ability is grating down the team performance we see this all the time and that is why you see top players get traded, their performance is just not worth the trauma, maybe Terrell Owens in american football is a classical example of this.
