Three people were killed when angry fans went on the rampage during a Nigerian league game played at the weekend, officials said Tuesday.

"Policemen attached to Enyimba shot dead three fans," said Akwa Ibom state sports official Chris Ekong.

"The police came to the stadium with live bullets and opened fire on fans when trouble began."

Fans went on the rampage when referee Felicia Okwugba awarded a penalty in the dying minutes of a Premier League match involving host team Akwa United and Enyimba with Akwa United leading 2-1.

They manhandled the referee leading policemen attached to Enyimba to open fire on them. They also set ablaze several vehicles parked at the stadium premises and clashed with police.

On Monday, angry youths took to the streets destroying property and looking to hunt down people from the eastern part of Nigeria, where Enyimba are based.

The Nigerian Football League (NFL) has since banned the Uyo Township Stadium where the match was played while Akwa United have been banished to Minna, northcentral Nigeria.

A special three-man probe panel has also been set up by the NFL to fully investigate the fracas.

LENS, France -- French riot police sprayed tears gas on Manchester United fans to dampen crowd trouble during the first half of a Champions League match between Lille and the English Premier League leaders on Tuesday.

United won the first leg tie 1-0 thanks to a controversial free kick goal from Ryan Giggs after 83 minutes that saw Lille players threaten to walk off.

"When the goalkeeper asks to place his wall, you should wait for the referee's whistle," Lille captain Gregory Tafforeau said. "There was no whistle at all and the player shot directly and the result is a goal."

Lille earlier had an effort by Peter Odemwingie ruled out because the referee said he pushed United defender Nemanja Vidic.

Problems off the pitch started 15 minutes into the game after a United fan climbed a fence at the Stade Felix-Bollaert to get on to the pitch and approached his team's goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar.

Stewards took the supporter back to the stands triggering an angry reaction from other United fans who were distressed at being pushed against the 10-foot high security fences.

Riot police intervened with truncheons and sprayed tear gas as several supporters tried to climb over the fences.

The game was not stopped and calm returned after a few minutes when two fans, including an elderly woman, were lifted over the barriers to safety.

United secretary Ken Ramsden said the club would meet with officials from European soccer's governing body UEFA and the English FA after the game to discuss the incident.
Expressed concern

Before the amtch United expressed concern about the basic facilities at the ground and were surprised Lille were allowed to move the game to the 42,000 capacity stadium in northern France rather than a larger venue like the Stade de France.

United were fortunate to be on level terms before their goal, Lille having had an effort disallowed just past the hour for pushing by scorer Peter Odemwingie on centre back Nemanja Vidic as he leapt forward to head the ball home.

Following Giggs' goal, a Lille coach grabbed the ball and appeared to ask his players to leave the field -- prompting an angry reaction from United coach Alex Ferguson.

"I've never seen that. It was complete intimidation of the referee," Ferguson said. "UEFA have got to do something. It's a disgrace -- that's not football. The Lil

One police man was killed! What is yuh point? As much as a police man got killed, did the police kill any of the civilians? I guess unuh mek the fact that the police in Nigeria is black, unuh all get blind. Why dem ago control crowd with live rounds? There are numerous riots at games in South America, unuh hear police using live rounds fi control the crowd?

Know what ... I guess if it was some white police that killed the people unuh would see it.
