  • Jamaica's myopic non-development strategy

..... 14 years after qualifying for the World Cup... Hmmmm let's see our 'development' model at werk..

    1. Start with the notion that local players have poor/no potential for developing into quality performers... aka the good ole foreign mind ting. This despite decisive evidence to the contrary in 1998 qualifying

    2. Since they have no potential ....pay lip service to them early in the WC qualifying cycle with little quality, consistent exposure to high level play & coaching.... thus creating the self-fulfilling prophecy that they're no good

    3. When things get critical...Declare a Player Emergency.... then....Start begging journeymen playing in England to represent Jamaica (granted a few are committed warriors who are self motivated ala Burton, Hall & Simpson of yore)....the majority are calculating mercenaries

    4. Squirm while these opportunistic Convenient Jamaicans make a mockery of the country in deciding whether we're good enough for them as they weigh other avenues to play in the WC or sniff out their club prospects

    5. Many get excited bellowing names of their latest favoured English contenders.... as this mercenary cohort waits to see which way the qualifying winds blow for Jamaica...after all they're too important to waste their time with preliminary rounds

    6. Maybe a few of them take the late plunge...and maybe they even assist in the qualifying campaign...who knows?

At this rate we'll never develop the players at home...nor a quality team nor philosophy

We'll be stuck watching sequels to this foreign B Movie into infinity

    What a shame

There are academies in farin countries that bring young Jamaican players (born, first generation, 2nd generation etc) up to adequate international standard..

There are none in Jamaica (not counting several holes where ground was broken)... rather some cute High School league that panders to the ego of 'old boys' :-)

That is all the self-fulfilling prophecy you need....

      Is this really true though?

We had no professional soccer player in 1998. Now check the pros we had since 98

We had no local agents and our coaches wasn't even recognised.

One would say many of our players are now better technically developed as oppose to 98.

We may not be beating down the world but the amount of young recruits that Craig Butler, MLS, Nordic etc and don't forget the ones who went to Spain are playing in good leagues and getting reviews.

Many of the people who are calling for UB40 will always. The fact is all teams in the world look for one and two players to plug certain position. Right now England looking for a creative midfielder as we are.

Check the goalie position how we have improved there with 4 professional goalie and now possible the best goalie in college. We could also bypass one of the best goal keeping talent in America in Sean Johnson.

What you speak of may be true but does not address the core issue

The fact is that we should be seeing transition from U17 to U21 to seniors for a core group of players...we are not seeing that. That's how countries develop a team philosophy and cohesive team play.... that's not developed by cherry picking remote players in the middle of qualifying competitions

But this process is too difficult for Jamaica....especially since we have the quick fix solution of dipping into the foreign gene pool.

That's cheaper and easier to do apparently

Well those old boys from disabled high schools certainly cannot be pandered to so out of pique they tend to place blame where it doesn't belong

If HS ball suddenly disappeared academies would not automatically appear. Also HS ball and academy development are not mutually exclusive.... so your argument has no logical basis.

The blame/responsibility for the lack of a good football development model lies with the JFF...period

Be patient countries with more resources and longer history can't do it on a regular basis so same thing with us. No matter what program we have we have to send our youngster out they will grow. We will always need one and two players to cork certain holes. Even big clubs who have devlopment plan have to do that.

It takes time and while more can be done we are second in the MLS with foriegn players, We have youths in leagues all over the world, and imagine 15 years ago we had youths only in the US A league.

              Be patient?? LOL

It will soon be 20 years since the 1994-1998 experience showed us the way to go...and we since have barely scratched the surface of player development at home.

A man could argue that we have more than another team out there currently with some decent players not in the squad. Tappa can't and will not complain because never before in our history we have so many players to call on.

A man looking from the outside will tell you that we are pushing above our weight based on the current players we have all over the world for 2.5 million.

Sass I am making the point that players are not being developed LOCALLY through a coherent system..

                      Thanks in advance

It may not be a coherrent system but players are been developed.

Check England just have their center of exellence. They never had central development before.

While we still have work to do we have achieved a good amount since 98. The JFF have a lot to do with the development of players like Rudi Austin, Jermaine Taylor and others who have come through the youth system.

More can be done but I don't see the shame. give a little credit too.

Players are being developed abroad...they also need to be developed at home where the majority are....no?
