Injury-plagued Lucas reveals heartache after being ruled out for three months

Liverpool have been hit by a major blow with midfielder Lucas Leiva ruled out of action for three months due to a thigh problem.

The Brazilian international had only just returned after seven months out with cruciate ligament damage but hobbled off just four minutes into Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

Lucas revealed his heartache at the news on Twitter on Wednesday. He said: 'No words to describe my feelings at the moment. It is been hard to be positive but I am sure better days will come. YNWA'

Blow: Lucas walks off after sustaining an injury against Manchester City

After the match at Anfield, Lucas said on Twitter: 'Thanks all the message. I am devastated but I need to put my head right and see in the next few days how bad was. Good night.'

The 25-year-old is seen as a key part of Rodgers' style, anchoring the midfield three alongside the likes of Joe Allen and Steven Gerrard.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said: 'It is very unfortunate. He has worked ever so hard to come back and he has been an outstanding player for me and person off the field as well.
'The indications are two to three months. It is quite a unique injury at the top of his right thigh.
'He has had a scan and we will see a specialist this evening. We'll see if it needs an operation or whether it is just recuperation.'

Agony: Lucas (left) had only just returned from seven months out injured

Lucas's latest setback should open the door for recent signing Nuri Sahin, the Turkey international who joined on loan from Real Madrid.

The former Borussia Dortmund man is likely to make his debut against Arsenal, the other club who showed a keen interest in him this summer, on Sunday.

This will put the team in an interesting predicament, but not an insurmountable one as long as Allen stays fit. If we lose Allen before Lucas comes back, we have no one who can play that spot other than Shelvey who really needs to play higher up the park. Allen was very good when he took over from Lucas against City. :fingerscrossed:

Sahin is an attacking midfielder which makes it unlikely he'll be deputized to fill Lucas's boots; Allen is the most likely replacement; under KD, it would have been the Hobbit Spearing (*groan*), but he should be on his way to Bolton. I suspect Sahin will get a run today against Hearts.

He is not eligible for the game tonight, and to comment on Sahin, the way Rodgers play it will be Sahin and Allen as the 2 deep lying midfielders with Gerrard in the free role. The system doesn't really require a specialist holding midfielder.
