Nuri Sahin's agent travelled to Merseyside on Thursday to tie up a deal with Liverpool as the Real Madrid midfielder made a dramatic u-turn over his future.
The Turkey international looked all set to join Arsenal at the beginning of the week, after he told Real that the Emirates was his preferred destination.
But in talks with his agent Reza Fazeli, it emerged that the Gunners were reluctant to commit to a loan agreement and instead were insistent on securing a permanent transfer immediately.
Scouting report: What could Arsenal or Liverpool fans expect from Nuri Sahin?
Real though, were unhappy with that arrangement, as was Sahin, who wants 12 months to see where he stands with the Spanish giants before moving on.

Liverpool are happy to accept an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent move if both parties agree, and Fazeli has now jetted to Merseyside to discuss terms with Kop MD Ian Ayre.
While the deal is not complete and Arsenal are still in the running, Real now seem convinced the player will move to Anfield, after they expressed their preference for that switch.
Earlier in the day, the Spanish football press reported that Sahin's future would be finally sorted in the next day or so.
It was Liverpool who were the first club to concrete their interest in the former Borussia Dortmund man, but Sahin was hoping to push through a move to the Emirates as recently as Tuesday due to his desire to play under Arsene Wenger.
Marca states that Liverpool were hoping to make the move official on Thursday, although the Mirror understands that a deal is still too far off to be concluded in such quick fashion.
The Madrid-based sports paper also asserts that Liverpool "has emerged as the most suitable option, as the player knows that Brendan Rodgers will guarantee him a place in the starting line-up".
That said, it is unlikely that the classy midfielder would spend too much time on the bench if he were to sign for the North London club.
