Clarke: Reds must finish in the top four despite owners' claim

Steve Clarke has strongly defended his and Kenny Dalglish’s reign at Liverpool and scoffed at suggestions that the club’s owners have not set a Champions League target for Brendan Rodgers.
West Bromwich Albion’s new head coach comes face to face with former Chelsea colleague Rodgers at the Hawthorns on Saturday, and admitted that he was axed by John W Henry following Dalglish’s exit.
But the former Anfield assistant manager claimed that Dalglish would have delivered a top-four finish this season as Liverpool were showing clear signs of resurgence, thanks to several of the Scot’s signings.

Main men: Steve Clarke with Markus Rosenberg, Yassine El Ghanassy, Claudio Yacob and Ben Foster

They reached two major cup finals — winning the Carling Cup — but an eighth-placed finish was insufficient progress for the American owners.
Clarke said: ‘Kenny and I did well. We came in at a difficult time. We stabilised the club. We reached two cup finals and put together a decent squad.

Sacked: Clarke (left) and Kenny Dalglish were dismissed by Liverpool
‘We didn’t envisage not being at Liverpool because we talked about our prospects for this coming season and agreed that top four was a realistic target.
‘Now the owners have said that top four is not imperative for the current campaign. I don’t believe that. A club like Liverpool have to be challenging for the top four. I don’t think the club or the fans can expect anything less.’

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
