  • U.S. stuns Mexico in historic Azteca win

Americans make history by beating El Tri in Mexico for first time

The United States ended 75 years of frustration in Mexico, winning at its southern neighbor and regional revival for the first time Wednesday night when Michael Orozco Fiscal's goal in the 80th minute and Tim Howard's late sprawling saves provided a 1-0 victory.

Dominated for most of the night, the Americans went ahead on a move created by a trio of second-half substitutes.

Brek Shea, who entered two minutes earlier, went down the left flank and around Severo Meza. Shea, back with the national team after being dropped for six months, crossed to Terrence Boyd. He made a quick backheel pass to Orozco Fiscal, who had entered in the 77th.

"Donovan was excellent. We knew he was a good player, but he really didn't do anything wrong in the whole game and made it difficult for us."

I just cannot understand why so much fuss about a friendly, it is a nice win, but this historic stuff on a friendly is irrelevant, now if it was a meaningful game in quals or a tournament in mex I can understand, but this is making a big deal out of something which has no real meaning.

The significance cannot be discounted. The US has now broken through a major psychological barrier, friendly or not.

What do you expect them to do? As Hortical said - defeating Mexico at the Azteca after years of trying is a BIG deal.

              Well said.

It's possible to celebrate this as a historic win while at the same time recognizing that it's not a qualifier. And that's exactly what's being done.

Paul if it was the A side I could say yes it is big, but this is just a feel out for both clubs. Nothing more.

                      Agree.

Jamaica beating Mexico at the same venue would have the same response!!

How often do you ever see Mexico lose at the Azteca to any team -- friendly or otherwise?

                        It's a rare thing.

Look Mexico had players just competing in the Olympics and that is at least 6 starters squad plus others that had commitment.

A win is a win yes but as I said both teams were just using feeler teams. Any day the US can beat a good Mexico team in Azteca I will give them 100% props.

"Feel out" is not relevant; there is no such things like a "friendly" between Mexico and the USA any more than there is such a thing as a friendly between Real Madrid and Barca.

On top of that, Mexico at the Azteca is a fortress. They could put out you granny an fi me, and they would still be hard to beat. The historical record shows this so to say that they didn't have their "A" team is simplistic especially considering that Ochoa; Rodriguez, Moreno, Torres; Guardado; Hernandez were all on the field. Also, it's not like the Brek Shea, Terrance Boyd and Michael Orozco Fiscal are *stars* on the American squad either.

The fact is that that the US held off a Mexican team that dominated them on the field (outshooting them 19-7) and way more possession. This is an important win psychologically. There is NO MISTAKE about that.
