And boss Neil Warnock revealed Hulse, 27, may miss the start of the next campaign, having gone off after a 22nd-minute collision with Petr Cech.

"Rob's likely to be out for the season, and maybe some of the next," he said.

"It looks like a double fracture and it's disappointing to lose him but we will know more over the next few days."

Hulse, United's leading scorer this season, was stretching to reach a low Keith Gillespie cross midway through the first-half when he collided with Chelsea keeper Cech.

"When I went for the ball we hit each other and I knew it was a strong hit," Cech told his club's official website.

"I was happy the ball went the other way and it wasn't a goal but when I saw him lying behind, I saw his leg so I knew it was going to be a problem.

"Of course it was an accident but it is always sad when you see a fellow professional injured on the pitch. It was very unlucky."

Warnock's side slipped a place to 17th in the table after the 3-0 defeat and are seven points above the relegation zone, with eight matches remaining.

But instead of dwelling on the setback of being without Hulse for the run-in, Warnock focused on the positives.

"We have to move on and it gives others an opportunity," he added.

"We've got Jonathan Stead, Christian Nade and Danny Webber, and then there's Luton Shelton, who is getting better."

Hulse has scored eight Premiership goals this term, which is almost a third of the club's total and more than double any of his team-mates.

Webber has struck three times, while Nade and Stead, a January arrival from Sunderland, have two to their name in the league.

Jamaican international Shelton, who also arrived in the January transfer window, is yet to make his United debut after joining from Helsingborg. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

He was injured and considered unfit when he got to Seffield. For the first time he was on the bench yesterday in any senior team game since arriving in Sheffield.

I guess it is ambiguity of the writer. Maybe he should have said ". . .and Luton Shelton who is now closer to full fitness".Shelton played in a reserves games recently, so the management must think he is at a point where if they had to call on him he should be able to deliver.

The management has shown that they still believe in Shelton by including him in the first team selection for the match against champions Chelsea, although he did not see any action. The club's management have also approved the release of Shelton forJamaica's game against Panama on the 26th of this month, further evidence that they are now willing to let him play football.

I think that it is good to see that Shelton arrived at a team where he was not rushed into action if he was not fully fit. Some teams would risk making the situation worse by playing the player when he was not fully fit.

Yuh have time fi waste, he is a regular poster here and as such doesn't need to be updated.

What I caan understand is why the astute Hortical said 'blie' despite knowing Shelton was one of the most expensive signings and the player the fans want to see most.

The intent of the phrase is that he will play sooner, and get an opportunity to showcase his skills. I agree the fans are looking forward to seeing him.
