<SPAN class=art-text>The USA move into pole position in the latest FIFA Women's World Ranking to bring an end to the three-and-a-half year reign of FIFA World Cup holders and current European champions Germany. With seven of the world's top ten teams taking part, the Mundialito Femenino (Mini World Cup), as the Algarve Cup is understandably also known, makes a definite impact on the ranking.

Along with new leaders the USA (1st, up 1), Denmark (6th, up 2) and Japan (9th, up 2) also climb. Meanwhile, Brazil (8th, down 2) again lose ground and China PR (11th, down 2) slip out of the top ten altogether.

Further down the ranks, Algeria (82nd, up 2) make the biggest gain thanks to two victories in the African qualifying competition for next year's Olympics. By contrast, a pair of defeats away to Greece results in a fall of five places for Romania (39th).

Now including a record 142 teams, the most since its introduction in July 2003 (at which time it was also headed by the USA), the ranking is drawn up on the basis of a range of factors including result, home advantage, importance of match and opponents' strength. It is published four times per year. According to the Big Count survey conducted by FIFA in 2001, 22 million women and girls around the world play football.

The next FIFA Women's World Ranking will be published on 15 June 2007.</SPAN></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
