Lewington had been linked with a move to Huddersfield last month but has instead opted to stay and help the Dons bounce straight back up to League One.
Dons' manager Martin Allen beamed: "I am delighted that Dean Lewington has signed.
"There has been a lot of interest in Dean at a higher level but he has seen over the past couple of weeks enough to convince himself that we can move this club forward, which he feels he wants to be part of.
"For me personally this is great news."
Lewington's decision deals a blow to Jamaican left back Garfield Reid's hopes of securing a move to the Dons. Reid is training with the club but has been unable to participate in any official pre-season friendlies while he waits for international clearance.
