Lewington had been linked with a move to Huddersfield last month but has instead opted to stay and help the Dons bounce straight back up to League One.

Dons' manager Martin Allen beamed: "I am delighted that Dean Lewington has signed.
"There has been a lot of interest in Dean at a higher level but he has seen over the past couple of weeks enough to convince himself that we can move this club forward, which he feels he wants to be part of.

"For me personally this is great news."

Lewington's decision deals a blow to Jamaican left back Garfield Reid's hopes of securing a move to the Dons. Reid is training with the club but has been unable to participate in any official pre-season friendlies while he waits for international clearance.

MK Dons prepared for Saturday’s friendly against Derby County with a training match against Rushden and Diamonds yesterday.

It turned out to be a game of three halves as Martin Allen’s men played out three 30-minute periods against the Conference outfit at Woughton.

The only squad members not involved were Ben Chorley, Gareth Edds and Sean O’Hanlon who sat out the session with minor knocks.

<TABLE class=leftImage align=left><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR></TBODY><CAPTION align=bottom>Spot on: Aaron Wilbraham steps up to fire in a penalty for the Dons against Rushden and Diamonds</CAPTION></TABLE>The game was a chance for the players to get some match time in their legs in the build up to the big League Two kick-off against Bury at the National Hockey Stadium on August 5.

Dean Lewington and Izale McLeod, who have both been linked with moves away from MK this summer, appeared for the Dons, with McLeod looking particularly threatening up front.

It was also an opportunity for Allen to cast his eye over a couple of trialists, including Jamaican international Garfield Reid.

The left-sided defender, who appeared in Jamaica’s friendly with England just before the World Cup, played the second and third periods and looked assured in defence and adventurous in attack.

But while the Dons ran out 3-0 winners, Allen was keen to emphasise the game was just another part of the day’s training session.

Immediately after the game he said: “Today gave everybody a chance to play and the boys did well. They were very competitive but the result wasn’t important, it was just another part of training.

“We are starting to put into place the way we want them to play and it was a good workout.

<TABLE class=rightImage align=right><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR></TBODY><CAPTION align=bottom>High and mighty: Drissa Diallo goes up for the ball against Rushden and Diamonds</CAPTION></TABLE>But as you can see, it was only part of training.

“The match is over but none of them have finished, they have to go out and do their weights and their sprinting exercises.

“They’ve got another couple of hours there on top of playing in the game but that’s the state of play right now.

“They have got some minutes under their belts, had a chance to get competitive and a chance to get to know each other because there are a lot of new players.

Those are the important things from the game today.

“There’s a long way to go, there are no points for today’s game but they’re doing alright and they are coming along nicely. They’re a good bunch of lads.” Attention now turns to the Dons’ first official pre-season friendly against Derby County this Saturday, when Billy Davies brings his Rams side to the National Hockey Stadium.

Chorley, Edds and O’Hanlon are unlikely to be risked but, those players aside, Allen will have a full squad to select from.</SPAN>
