    25 penalties?! - McAuley win shoot-out thriller 13-12

    Saturday, June 23, 2012

MCAULEY Primary defeated Gregory Park Primary, 13-12 on penalties, in one of the most enthralling matches in season two of the LIME/INSPORTS Primary League at Spanish Town Prison Ova on Thursday.

It took a competition record of 26 penalties to separate both teams, 24 of which were scored successively between either side following a very entertaining 3-3 tie.

Bobby McLean of Gregory Park booted the 25th penalty kick over the crossbar to hand McAuley the advantage of which Shamar Smith gleefully accepted to send last year's national runners-up into the quarter-finals.

Except for the windy conditions at times it was a good day for football. However, both teams failed to adjust to the elements during key moments of the contest.

McAuley, who successfully defended their St Catherine title, started as favourites in this Round-of-16 clash, but found themselves under early pressure.

Gregory Park's Aldino Walker seemed likely to score when he outpaced his markers, only to see his effort deflected by the onrushing McAuley goalkeeper Ryan Hackett. But their reward would come from the resulting corner which McAuley's Dunell Martin turned into his own net.

Moments later and perhaps a bit of poetic justice, McAuley were back on level terms as Kimani Gibbon, who in a bid to clear the ball, directed Martin's strike into his own goal beyond a hapless Shemar Carless in goal for Gregory Park.

Early into the second half, captain Ricardo Richards robbed a Gregory Park defender of the ball before racing clear to fire his team in the lead for the first time.

But again the lead was shortlived, as Shamar Earle's header with assistance from the breeze was fumbled by Hackett.

With six minutes remaining, McAuley took the lead yet again when Omar Brown headed home from a corner.

Hackett's day of horror wasn't done though, as he anxiously clapped at a weak effort on goal, while the ball deflected off his hand and trickled into the goal.

Clearly jaded, neither side could muster any chance of real worth in extra-time.

The resulting shoot-out saw all kickers being 100 per cent accurate after 12 kicks each until McLean, perhaps overwhelmed by the occasion, skied his effort.

The final set of matches in the Round-of-16 will be played tomorrow with St Ann's Steer Town Primary hosting St Andrew winners Tarrant Primary at Addison Park; while St Thomas team Yallahs Primary travel to Boundbrook Primary for a 2:00 pm game.
