  • Sooo? The picks to advance from quarter-finals of EURO 2012

Already come through with Portugal...and already stated Italy to beat England...the other 2 picks Germany and Spain!

After watching all the matches of these quarters the picks for the semi-winners!

*I am facinated by the apparent relative 'speed across ground' of each player and aggregate view of that 'speed' for TEAM...

Danny Welbeck - As round example I have always viewed him as extremely fast. Judging his movement across ground relative to opposing players around him now, to me, makes him seem to be nothing special. Soooooo I have to ask myself - i) Is he not 'trying'? ii) Is he not all that fast? iii) ...or is it all these (many/most) of his opponents are very fast?

    Which is it?

...or could my eyes be playing tricks on me and he is showing he is 'plenty' faster than those opponents he has met up against in these Euro 2012 matches but I am missing same?

NB: Just a reminder that my wished for TEAM has all players blinding fast, technically as good as Cesc Fabregas and goalscorer of the Gerhard "Gerd" Muller class with all the players with great tactical ability.

Perfect Football: As I said some many years past in the early days of the forum...the perfect match would be 'no mistakes' with each side (each TEAM) retriving ball from goal after each kick-off.

Of course that TEAM will never be...but I am thinking a coach/manager/technical director should always start from that base ideal and select his players to mould into TEAM accordingly!

If France goes through, that would indeed be an upset. My picks for tomorrow and Sunday are: Spain, England. To win, England has to avoid two things 1) Italy scoring first and 2) A draw after extra time. If Italy scores first, England ain't coming back and if it goes to penalties, the ghost of their past penalty shootouts will haunt them...which really means that if they want to have a chance of winning a shootout, give all the penalties to the youngsters (Carroll, Wellbeck, Walcott, Young, Milner etc. but people like Terry, Cole and Gerrard - dem man supposed to sit down; they are blighted.

My sincere hope though, is that they go to penalties and win. They need to get that monkey off their back. To his credit, Roy ordered extra penalty taking practice this week. And for the avoidance of doubt...I still think Roy is a bonehead. But I don't mind him proving me wrong.

England is in my heart but my eyes/the fact is besides flashes of brilliance [Walcott twice, Welbeck's goal, Gerrard's steadiness and making of goals, Terry's save - Was it in or out? - they have performed in a horrible manner...save for the results.

Having said that drawing Italy is a Godsend as Italy very often only does 'just enough' thus always giving opponents chance to nick a win or draw. Italy is the better TEAM...and should win/Is my pick to win!

Good game for 1 half! ...pity the Italians went down to 10 men. With this passing game of Spain that was a massive blow to the Italians. Knocked Italy our of the match immediately and killed off the match as contest.

No excuses for the azurri, this is the finals, adjust with 10 and play hard, they started flagging mid second half and Spain was not playing let up like American football rules.
