Captain Horace Burrell lauded players and organisers of the Captain's Bakery Clarendon Major League for their enthusiasm following the mid-season final between Morgan's Pass and Gayle at Turners Oval in the parish recently.
"When a sponsor experiences this level of enthusiasm, there is nothing he can do but continue...," said the former president of the Jamaica Football Federation, who delivered the main speech at the post-match awards ceremony.
Burrell, the CEO of the chain of bakeries and a member of the Clarendon FA's executive, added that he was pleased that the initiative to have foreign referees officiating in the parish league was beginning to reap success as three Caymanians, - Alfredo Whittaker, Peterkin Berry and Livingston Bailey - took charge of the mid-season final.
"When I was invited to serveon the board of the Clarendon FA by president Michael Ricketts, we discussed a number of initiatives, which included the exchange programme with referees," said Burrell.
"It was clear that these officials made a difference, the game was just electrifying and the atmosphere was fantastic," he added. "It is the first time that international referees have been used at the parish level," said Burrell who is an executive member of CONCACAF.
Meanwhile, Morgan's Pass were crowned mid-season champions after defeating Gayle 6-5 on penalties after both team ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time.
It was Morgan's Pass who drew first blood when Caymanian ref Whittaker awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute. Ian Ingram made no mistake from the 12-yard spot.
This gave Morgan's Pass a boost as they continued to dominate the game, keeping Gayle at bay.
The second half saw both teams evening out, but again Morgan's Pass would not allow Gayle to get the equaliser until the 90th-minute courtesy of a strike from Davin McKoy.
The league continues today with two matches. Avengers face New Longsville at the Country Club, while Mitchell Town meet Morgan's Pass at the Pawsley Park. Tomorrow, Name Brand tackle Tollgate in the lone game.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
