Euro 2012: Gary Cahill ruled out with fractured jaw

    Comments (174)

England defender Gary Cahill has been ruled out of Euro 2012 with a double fracture of his jaw.
The Chelsea centre-half suffered the injury when he collided with goalkeeper Joe Hart during the friendly win over Belgium on Saturday.
Liverpool's Martin Kelly has been called up as his replacement, subject to Uefa's approval.
Fellow defender John Terry's hamstring injury has been given the all-clear after a scan.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on Twitter: "What reasons?????!!!"

An FA statement said: "Cahill has two fractures of his jaw, one either side.
"The England medical team have been in close contact overnight with Cahill's club doctors who will treat him moving forward."
England manager Roy Hodgson had already lost goalkeeper John Ruddy (fractured finger) as well as midfielders Gareth Barry (abdomen) and Frank Lampard (thigh) from his original 23-man squad.
Liverpool full-back Kelly made his international debut as a substitute against Norway last weekend, and the 22-year-old has been called up ahead of the more experienced Micah Richards and Rio Ferdinand.
Former captain Ferdinand has won 81 caps for his country but was left out of Hodgson's initial squad.
    Who is Martin Kelly?
    • Born 27 Apr 1990
    • 47 appearances for Liverpool
    • 1 goal
    • 1 England cap versus Norway 26/05/2012
    • 6 caps for England U21s
    • 4 caps for U20s
    • 5 appearances for U19s

Cahill looked in line to start alongside Chelsea team-mate Terry against France in England's Euro 2012 opener in Donetsk on 11 June, but his absence now opens the door for either Manchester City's Joleon Lescott or Everton's Phil Jagielka.
Manchester United's Phil Jones is the only other recognised central defender - though he may be needed in midfield following the injuries to Lampard and Barry.
Cahill collided with Hart after a push from Belgium winger Dries Mertens in the 17th minute at Wembley.
Hodgson said after the game: "I wasn't too happy about the challenge.
"When a striker is chasing a defender who is feeding a ball to the goalkeeper, those nudges and pushes take the defender into the goalkeeper.
"It is something if you have been a goalkeeper you take very unkindly to.
"The referee gave him a yellow card, which he deserved."
Kelly's call-up means that there are now six Liverpool players in the 23-man squad travelling to Ukraine and Poland - more than from any other club.
    Revised England squad:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Robert Green (West Ham), Jack Butland (Birmingham City).
Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Martin Kelly (Liverpool), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton).
Midfielders: Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Manchester United).
Forwards: Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United).

Rucks how? He made the choice. Each and every coach have to make their own choice and live with it. You nuh see him leave Rio? that is his choice.

There is nothing about Rux in choosing your player. Never see a coach who choose all players I liked.

you a talk like you nuh know this thing. Hodgson already worked with most of these players and in the short run it is better for him.

I can only hope it work out for him. Have nothing to do with Rux. If you notice the team playing already look better than under Capello when they had no riddim whatsoever.

                      Hodgson criticised over Ferdi snub

                      Sun, 03 Jun 18:57:06 2012

Rio Ferdinand's representative has accused the Football Association and England manager Roy Hodgson of treating the defender with "a total lack of respect" after the Manchester United defender suffered another Euro 2012 snub.
The FA confirmed on Sunday that Gary Cahill had been ruled out of the tournament after fracturing his jaw in two places during Saturday's friendly win over Belgium at Wembley.
It meant Hodgson had another space to fill in his squad, having already used his standby defender, Phil Jagielka, to replace Gareth Barry last week. Ferdinand, 33, would have been the obvious choice given his vast experience, a commodity which England have lost so much of following the injuries to Barry and Frank Lampard in the past week.
Instead Hodgson has gone for Liverpool youngster Martin Kelly, who made his international debut as a substitute in the final two minutes of the win in Norway on May 26.
Hodgson faced a barrage of questions when naming his squad on May 16 about whether he had snubbed Ferdinand because of concerns the centre-back would not be able to get along with John Terry, in light of Terry's impending court case for alleged racist remarks to Ferdinand's brother Anton at Loftus Road in October. Terry denies the charge against him.
And it appears the Ferdinand camp feel there is more to the decision than simply "footballing reasons", the grounds Hodgson gave for leaving the Manchester United man out of his initial squad. Ferdinand's representative and long-standing friend Jamie Moralee said: "Lampard, Terry, Barry, Gerrard; all ageing but they go to the tournament.
"Why is Rio different? To treat a player that has captained and served his country 81 times (in this manner) is nothing short of disgraceful. Total lack of respect from Hodgson and the FA as far as I am concerned."
Kelly, who made just 12 Premier League appearances for Liverpool last term, is bound to be relishing his chance. But having lost the equivalent of 143 caps' worth of experience last week when Lampard and Barry were ruled out, then bemoaned how much they would be missed, it is hard to believe Hodgson has ignored Ferdinand on form grounds alone.
That will bring yet more questions of the coach at the first available opportunity after England arrive at their Krakow base on Wednesday providing, as expected, Terry gets the green light to travel after an initial scan on the tight hamstring he experienced against Belgium yesterday indicated there was no serious damage.
"What reasons?????!!!" was Ferdinand's first reaction to his 2.8million Twitter followers as debate raged this afternoon, indicating a sense of disenchantment that is magnified in private as the defender tries to comprehend the decision Hodgson has reached.

Where am I supporting Hodgson. I said the man is a good coach. That stands on its own. He will pick his player and he has to stand by it win or loose. He picked a young Liverpool player he think is good enough. He has to live with that.

On the support of Tappa, I make no reservation but support the Jamaica National team and will not give upon them before they lose, I will give all my SUPPORT.Again I gave my idea of what team I would prefer but Tappa pick his team and we have to live with it. I will support him and the team and wish for the best. I wont APOLOGISE IN NO WAY FOR THAT.

Thats the problem your good is what the majority call RUX and your conclusions at arriving to that assumption is the bigger problem.Hodgson record speaks for itself.

Supporting Jamaican football doesnt mean you have to support the team or coach !

If the coach is a RUX and we have a good team, the coach must be sacked in the name of Jamaican football, same with players if they are RUXES and we have a good coach I expect him to weed out the bad and leave the good and plant just as good or better.

Jamaicas football is more than a team or coach , it is a philosophy a movement.

As of now its too late for that (being a realist) we have hope and prayers on our side to make it past this round.Leave technical and tactical ability out of it ,on Tappas part.
