The Football Association are expected to make an official approach inside the next fortnight to the man they hope will become the new England manager, with Harry Redknapp understood to be at the top of their list.
But Sportsmail believes there could be more than one approach, partly because there is no guarantee the man they target will accept their offer to become Fabio Capello’s successor but also because they would not want to give a single candidate too strong a bargaining position.
Roy Hodgson is also likely to receive an approach, although the FA have no desire to pay either man the £6million a year received by Capello.
First choice: The FA will approach Spurs to talk to Harry Redknapp over the vacant England manager's job
The third week in April has been pencilled in as the time to make contact, with the FA expected to send an official letter to the club that employs the manager and then follow up with an email.
That said, there will be an opportunity for the FA and Tottenham chiefs to meet when Redknapp takes his side to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final on April 15.
Chance meeting: Redknapp (back right) was at QPR v Arsenal on Saturday along with FA Chairman David Bernstein (bottom left)
By then the four-man Club England board of David Bernstein, Alex Horne, Sir Trevor Brooking and Adrian Bevington would have completed their ‘due diligence’ on the candidates and recommended their choice to the FA board.
So far discussions have been kept between the Club England quartet, with no candidates being discussed at last week’s board meeting.
Redknapp is expected to be the manager they approach, after which they would have to reach a financial settlement with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
The back-up plan: Roy Hodgson is The FA's plan B for the England job
But there is a desire to have everything resolved by the end of the month, allowing Redknapp to finish the season with Tottenham before taking charge in time for the European Championship.
There is no great wish to see Stuart Pearce take the national team to a major tournament, despite the FA’s gratitude towards him for stepping into the role.
The FA would consider Euro 2012 valuable experience given the wish to see their next manager then take England to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
