Suarez sparks 'cheat' goal row after handling in Liverpool's defeat to Wigan

    By Mark Ryan
PUBLISHED: 17:00 EST, 24 March 2012 | UPDATED: 17:00 EST, 24 March 2012 Luis Suarez was at the centre of a cheating storm on Saturday night as Liverpool slumped to defeat by relegation-threatened Wigan at Anfield.

The controversial Uruguayan handled the ball over the line in the 53rd minute and celebrated as though he thought his effort was legitimate.

High hopes: Suarez rises to bundle the ball home

Referee Lee Mason booked him instead, ruling out a score that would have put Liverpool 2-1 ahead, after an earlier Suarez goal had cancelled out a spot-kick opener from Shaun Maloney.
But Wigan were able to ease their relegation fears with a dramatic winner from captain Gary Caldwell.

Unaware: Suarez celebrates as Lee Mason blows his whistle

    Baffled: Suarez pleads his innocence

There were boos from some parts of the Anfield crowd towards their own team at the end and home boss Kenny Dalglish said bitterly: ‘If that was hand-ball I must have been watching a different telly.

‘It shouldn’t have been chalked off. I think it hit his shoulder as he tried to play it. And to be booked as well? It wasn’t justified, he was jumping for the ball.’
But Wigan manager Roberto Martinez disagreed. ‘I’ve seen the replay and it’s a clear hand-ball,’ said the Spaniard. ‘We all know Suarez is an artist at getting free-kicks and good situations for himself. Lee Mason was very strong... and he had to be.

‘I have had so many bad decisions this season I’ve always kept my mouth shut and today I will only concentrate and enjoy our victory.’

Dalglish suggested the defeat was ‘the price of success’ in the cups, an analysis which may not please his American bosses, who have said that the lucrative prize of Champions League qualification was their main goal this season.

In their worst run since January 2005, Liverpool have now won just one of their past seven Premier League games and only one of their past five at Anfield. Last month’s Carling Cup winners have picked up just eight points from their past 11 League games.

Humiliated: Liverpool lost at home again

Dalglish blamed burnout for the latest poor home performance. Indeed, Liverpool have won only twice at Anfield in the League this year.
‘If you play Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday it’s going to take its toll,’ claimed Dalglish.

‘Whether that’s the price you have to pay for success or a demanding TV schedule, I don’t know. We’re disappointed because a lot of the final balls in good positions we didn’t deliver. Put that down to tiredness.’

How many different ways must I say it - Suarez is the scum of the earth! And when some say what he did at the world cup would have been done by any player...just not true! it was the depths of bad sportsmanship and he has not learnt a thing from that.

Won't even touch the race thing!

s for his most recent transgression, at the very least he bundled over the player who was about to head the ball out of his goal, not fist it away as Suarez would have done. It's a foul any way you look at it. And to see Suarez run off as if he did nothing wrong...scumbag!

Liverfool needs to get rid of this cancer!

So henry handling the ball in the wc qualifying ireland game, makes him an angel when he said it was a normal reaction ,or maradonna hand of god makes him an angel.

Suarez is a liverpool balla and as long as its so he gets my support.

suarez is fast becoming a BLIGHT on liverpool ....

mi admire X blind loyalty but sooner or later he will realize that support of suarez is not support of liverpool and all that it stands for, or stood for.

You guys (the Suarez haters) are making your HATRED, DISGUST and CONTEMPT of Suarez blind you to the realities of football... like unuh don't watch any other team or player with this kind of bile and venom when the same thing is done... that is X's point.

But.. first, I will say I did NOT see the incident and so I cannot comment on it. In general, if a player tries to fool the ref DELIBERATELY then he is cheating... what he did two years ago was against the laws of the game but it was blatant, there was no attempt to deceive. (My comment with that incident was not that ANY player would do it, BUT that I would have done so). I will therefore reserve my comment til I see a replay of this incident... I do not trust Mo, Gamma or Jangle's word WHEN it comes to Suarez as you guys have already labelled him and every action that he does automatically fits the label... prejudice some might call it.

Anyhow, what I will say is that if we are going to judge a player in a particular way, we should be consistent and not just pick on the man you hate with a passion... how many "cheaters" are there plying their trade in the pro leagues if the standard is where you set it? call all a dem out...

I dunno, Peter R, but maybe you can help me with this - how many players you know continually handle the ball to score goals and to deny goals and will throw in some racist taunts along the way?

                Take your time!

because you have said so it makes it so .... suarez has been happy to feed it though ...... time and again

and while i could counter that with an allegation that your blindness is because of the fact that he plays for your team, i will not ...

Honestly I do not know that he has handled the ball to score any goal... I know he prevented a goal in the WC with a blatant and outrageous handball (you can check the archives to see my disgust at that), I know of the Evra fiasco and now this... the first two I have commented on so will not elaborate, the last I cannot comment on til I see a replay... I know you will fill in the missing blanks for me

That's a fair comment... as far as being blind becasue he is a L'pool player that COULD be so, but until I am convinced that he is the "Scumbag" you guys paint him to be i will maintain this position.

I will reiterate that Suarez's actions (regardless of how trivial in terms of football) seem to be watched by a certain cadre in the media (paypas haffi sell!) (and this board) because he is a Liverpool player and because of the incident in the WC and with Evra; his actions seem to be highlighted IMO more so than any other player who commits the same infractions... and I am not saying that he has or has not... but he gets way more attention from the media and thus you guys than Joe Blow in the league...

i don't care which team he plays for ..... may i remind that when that entire 3 or 4 wat trade was made where suarez went to liverpool i was fron and centre saying that you guys had gotten the better deal and i was full of praise for suarez as a football player, he is still a very very good football player imho, but other than that i have no respect for him as a person.

let us assume that you are right and the media focuses more on him, he keeps giving them fodder

Jangle, dat is evidence of cheating!!! wtf ?? There is no forward worth his salt who would not make that run... the ball was falling from high and it STILL is not clear to me that he "handled" the ball and directed it in with his hand... call it the Liverpool glasses effect ... ( I will look for something that is clearer but it really isn't necessary; I was looking for a TH type hand ball de way unuh a gwaaan) the shove in the back of the defender gave him position and I don't really have a problem with the goal being called back for that infringement... but if THAT play is what you guys are all getting excited over... all I can do is shake my head... that is a run of the mill encounter in that kind of situation and to continue characterise the man as you all have (some of you) demonstrates to my mind clear prejudice against the player...
