Sheffield Wednesday lost ground in the race for automatic promotion after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Colchester.
Colchester took a third-minute lead when Ian Henderson poked a low shot past Owls goalkeeper Stephen Bywater from close range, after Steven Gillespie had pounced on Michail Antonio's error in the box and picked him out.
Wednesday were largely restricted to long-range efforts in the first half but Nile Ranger squandered a gilt-edged chance after 19 minutes when he sliced well wide with the goal at his mercy, after Antonio had fired across goal.
But Wednesday got back on level terms seven minutes after half-time through Miguel Angel Llera, who converted from close range after Colchester had failed to adequately deal with Chris Lines' free-kick from near the corner flag.
Madine headed over from Lines' free-kick soon after while Gillespie forced Bywater to save, as both sides went for a winner.

The final whistle was greeted with a triumphant pitch invasion by 22,000 home supporters who can now look forward to Manchester United and Chelsea visiting the Madejski Stadium.

Brian McDermott was a picture of sorrow after watching his side lose to Swansea in last season’s play-off final against Swansea.
But what a difference 12 months make.
‘This is the best moment in my football career, considering the worst moment in my football career was losing the play-off final last year,’ said McDermott.
‘I had the worst summer, I’ll have the best summer now. It’s a strange feeling, it feels like it’s someone else who has achieved it.
‘But I’ve been very lucky with the players and staff I’ve got — they have carried me along.
‘I’m not bothered about the Premier League now, I’m only concerned with the great staff and group we have.
‘I’ve known the chairman (John Madejski) for 12 years and he gave me the opportunity in the first place, a lot of people wouldn’t have had a clue who I was — so I’ll always we grateful for that.’
But people will certainly know who he is now as he prepares to pit his wits against Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

Mobbed: Reading midfielder Mikele Leigertwood is congratulated by team-mates after scoring the winner

Past, present and future: (left-right) Royals chairman Sir John Madejski, manager Brian McDermott and prospective new owner Anton Zingarevich celebrate in the stands at the Madejski Stadium

‘Brian McDermott has done this, he’s been here 12 years — it feels like 100 — and knows the squad, he’s been a stalwart,’ said Madejski.
‘He’s handled the team in just the right way and that is why we are where we are. He deserves everything he gets.
‘He’s the best manager you could ever want, I promise you. Straightforward, no showing off, honest, a thoroughly nice human being. The more people in world like Brian the better off the world would be.’

Roar: Defender Alex Pearce and striker Simon Church (bottom left) celebrate Reading's achievement

But Reading were made to sweat for their moment of glory as Nottingham Forest tried threatened to spoil the party. The home side knew what was required: better West Ham’s result at Bristol City and they were a Premier League side again.
They got off to a timid start but as news filtered through of West Ham taking the lead at Ashton Gate, Reading began to take a grip on proceedings.
Wingers Jobi McAnuff and Jimmy Kebe were beginning to cause problems, while Jason Roberts’ was keeping centre backs Joel Lynch and Luke Chambers well occupied.

And as the home crowd reacted to Bristol City’s equaliser against the Hammers, McDermott’s side thought they had one foot in the Premier League in the 20th minute.
Noel Hunt appeared to have beaten Forest keeper Lee Camp to a looping McAnuff cross from the left and the Irishman’s header hit the bar before Roberts nodded into an unguarded net.
But the on-loan forward’s glee was short-lived as referee Gavin Ward chalked off the effort, ruling Hunt had impeded Camp. Then, seven minutes frm the break, Hayden Mullins saw his strike from the edge of the box well parried by Camp as the promotion chasers turned up the heat in the closing stages of the first half.
Under pressure: Reading forward Noel Hunt and Forest's Joel Lynch (right) battle for the ball

But as Reading looked to turn the screw in search of promotion, Forest came mightily close to taking a spectacular lead in the 57th minute.
Lewis McGugan’s corner caused problems in the Reading backline and right back George Elokobi sent an acrobatic overhead kick inches over Reading’s bar.
McDermott responded by sending on supersub Adam Le Fondre — the hero from last Friday night’s vital win over Southampton — in search of victory.
Party pooper: Nottingham Forest's George Elokobi was furious despite the celebrations around him

And he missed a glorious chance to add to his recent heroics in the 66th minute after going clean through after Harte’s long punt — but the striker sent his delicate effort agonisingly wide.
Reading were nearly made to pay for that miss and it was Elokobi again who was unlucky as his fierce drive from 12 yards after another dangerous McGugan corner ricochet off the top of the bar in the 72nd minute.
However, with West Ham’s draw at Ashton Gate confirmed the moment Reading had been waiting for came when Leigertwood rammed home Harte’s corner from close range to send the Madejski Stadium into a frenzy.

Drinks are on me: Reading's Jobi McAnuff celebrates their promotion with champagne

Reading were forced to endure a late scare when Pearce cleared a Blackstock header off the line in injury time as Forest threatened to break Royals hearts.
A late Forest goal would have left McDermott with an unwanted headache heading into the final two games of the season.
Saying that, he’s probably got a much bigger headache on Wednesday morning.
