Manchester United 2 West Brom 0: Advantage Fergie as Rooney double lifts United over City to top spot

Wayne Rooney's double swept Manchester United to the top of the Barclays Premier League for the first time this year as West Brom were brushed aside at Old Trafford.
Rooney took his season tally to 26 with a goal either side of the interval as United took advantage of Manchester City's shock defeat at Swansea to assume that familiar position at the head of affairs on the title run-in.
And with United at relegation-haunted Wolves next Sunday, City could find themselves four points adrift before they take to the field again, against resurgent Chelsea, at the Etihad Stadium on March 21.
Neat: Manchester United's Wayne Rooney opened the scoring

Delight: Rooney celebrates after sending United on their way to victory

    MATCH FACTS

Manchester United: De Gea, Evra, Jones, Ferdinand, Evans, Carrick, Young, Scholes (Pogba 72), Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck (Cleverley 77)

    Goals: Rooney 35, 71
Unused subs: Amos, Rafael, Giggs, Park Ji-sung, Berbatov

West Brom: Foster, Olsson, Ridgewell, McAuley, Tamas, Morrison, Andrews (Scharner 72), Brunt (Shorey 72), Mulumbu, Odemwingie, Fortune (Long 77)
Unused subs: Daniels, Tchoyi, Dorrans, Cox

    Booked: Olsson

    Sent off: Olsson
    Referee: Probert
    Attendance: 75, 598

That it could turn out to be such a pivotal day should not come as a surprise.
Since United won at Tottenham a week ago, the battle to be champions has been condensed into who wins the derby on April 30, with the eight games in between largely an irrelevance.
However, the traps that have to be negotiated on the path to glory are not insignificant as United, even with all their experience, so nearly found out and City did.
The Old Trafford outfit were still trying to adjust to a line-up with only one conventional winger in Ashley Young when Keith Andrews slid in to reach Liam Ridgewell's low left-wing cross.
It seemed the Irishman was sure to score. Instead, he prodded his effort wide.
Then, when Chris Brunt had touched a 30-yard free-kick into his path, Andrew let fly with a thunderous shot that would have found the bottom corner had David de Gea, not for the first time in recent games, not made a fine, full-length save.
It was the cue for Sir Alex Ferguson's side to awake from their slumber and Young to have an impact.
If Nani is going to be out for a few weeks as pre-match rumours suggested, Young is going to be a key man and needs to find the form he produced in his first few weeks as a United player.
Together with skipper Patrice Evra, Young tormented the right side of West Brom's defence.
The former Aston Villa man had a shot beaten away by Ben Foster, then ran on to Danny Welbeck's back-heeled through ball before cutting a cute cross back into the box which Jonas Olsson managed to scramble away.
When United's opener came, it was a wonder Young was not involved.
Cool: Rooney sent Ben Foster the wrong way from the spot

The Premier League could have been forgiven a sharp intake of breath as Foster immediately appealed for offside as Rooney touched home Javier Hernandez's cross from what did appear to be an illegal position.
After what went on at Bolton yesterday, further controversy was the last thing they needed.
Happily, in this instance, TV replays showed the officials had got it absolutely spot on as Rooney timed his run to perfection before netting for the fourth time in a week.
Leaders: Manchester United lead the title race after City stumbled

Peter Odemwingie had been a subdued presence during the opening period.
But when he went over Evra's half-hearted challenge, he was convinced West Brom should have had a penalty. He might have been right too, as Evra did not play the ball and dangled a leg out for the striker to fall on.
It was another of those fortunate moments United make a habit of capitalising on.
This time, they could not do it as Hernandez drove a shot against a post, Rooney's overhead kick went straight to Foster and, most startlingly of all, Welbeck slid his shot wide of an open goal after the entire West Brom defence, including their goalkeeper, had got caught out by Scholes' inspired long pass.

Dismissed: Jonas Olsson was given his marching orders for two bookings

No entry: Foster denies Ashley Young

Booked at the start of the second period for a foul on Rooney, Olsson brought his afternoon to an early conclusion when he was beaten to Welbeck's pass by Hernandez and chopped the Mexican down instead.
Within five minutes, the hosts had their second, Rooney again the scorer, slotting home a clinical penalty after Andrews had fouled Young.
Squeaky bum time: United have a track record of strong run-ins

Among the plethora of substitutions that followed came Paul Pogba's for Scholes, which tends to shoot down suggestions that the teenage Frenchman has agreed to join Juventus in the summer.
Young and Hernandez both wasted chances to reduce the goal difference advantage City have in their favour at present.
However, it may not come down to that. And at Molineux, in United's next game, it will hardly please under-fire Wolves boss Terry Connor to know his opponents could really turn the screw.

Swansea 1 Manchester City 0: Moore's late goal swings title race in United's favour

    By Sportsmail Reporter
    PUBLISHED: 15:54, 11 March 2012 | UPDATED: 17:13, 11 March 2012
Manchester City's Barclays Premier League title aspirations were dealt a major blow as Luke Moore's late header saw Swansea once again upset one of the top-flight big guns at the Liberty Stadium.
Substitute Moore had only been on the field a matter of minutes when he rose at the far post to head Wayne Routledge's cross beyond Joe Hart.

It could have been worse for City had Scott Sinclair converted an early penalty, although Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero spurned good chances for the visitors and Micah Richards had a header ruled out in the dying moments.

Leaving it late: Luke Moore celebrates his late header to give Swansea the win

    MATCH FACTS:

Swansea: Swansea: Vorm, Rangel, Williams, Caulker, Taylor, Allen, Britton, Sinclair, Sigurdsson, Routledge (Monk 87), Graham (Moore 79).
Subs Not Used: Tremmel, Tate, McEachran, Lita,Gower.
    Goal: Moore 83.
Man City: Hart, Richards, Savic, Toure, Clichy, Barry (Aguero 37), De Jong (Johnson 84), Nasri, Toure Yaya, Silva (Dzeko 87), Balotelli.
Subs Not Used: Pantilimon, Milner, Pizarro, Kolarov.
    Booked: De Jong, Balotelli.

    Attendance: 20,510
    Referee: Lee Mason

Defeat sees Roberto Mancini's side, who have topped the table since October, fall behind rivals Manchester United after their win at home to West Brom.
And the visitors could have few complaints as they paid the price for an ineffectual display.
For Swansea, the win moves them ever closer to survival, with a 14-point gap to the bottom three all but guaranteeing them another season in the Premier League.
Swansea had already beaten Arsenal at their Liberty Stadium home and drawn with Chelsea and Tottenham this season, and their confidence was clear to see during a bright opening.
Sinclair and Danny Graham linked well down the left, but Routledge could not control his volley.
Sinclair should have given Swansea a seventh-minute lead after referee Lee Mason adjudged Routledge had been felled by the advancing Joe Hart and awarded a penalty.

Putting his head on it: Moore gets his goal to earn Swansea the win
But the winger failed to find the net from the spot for the first time this season as Hart saved the tame effort low to his right.
City had spent the majority of the opening 20 minutes penned in their own half, aside from a brief breakout that saw Balotelli show nice footwork before Steven Caulker made a vital challenge as the Italian shaped to shoot.

Late drama: Michah Richards has a late goal disallowed for offside

Balotelli was cutting an increasingly frustrated figure and he let it show as he attempted a shot from near the touchline on halfway which flew well wide of the goal.
Mancini removed Gareth Barry, who cut a disgruntled figure as he left the field, after 37 minutes to bring on Aguero.
And the Argentinian's introduction heralded City's best spell of the half as Yaya Toure's volley was deflected over by Gylfi Sigurdsson's block, before his brother Kolo headed off target and David Silva drilled a shot wide just before the break.
Spot of bother: Scott Sinclair has his penalty saved

Getting across: Joe Hart makes a save from Sinclair's spot kick

Making his mark: Hart celebrates the penalty save

City continued to press at the start of the second half and Aguero failed to make the most of a good chance as he shot wide when Balotelli picked him out after cutting out Caulker's lazy pass.
It was Swansea's turn to go close moments later as Graham's ball across the six-yard box almost found Joe Allen's run, with Kolo Toure diverting the ball to safety.
City felt they should have had a penalty of their own on the hour mark when Balotelli went to ground very easily with Allen in close attendance, but referee Mason waved away the appeals much to frustration of the City players.

Watching it all the way: David Silva can't get past Joe Allen
Michel Vorm then made a sharp save to deny Richards after Silva had tricked his way into the box.
Caulker flashed a header across the face of goal from a Sigurdsson corner while Hart made easy work of a weak shot from Routledge as Swansea lifted the heavy pressure they had been under.

And the Swans then stunned the visitors as they snatched the lead with just seven minutes to go.
Yaya Toure was caught in possession by Sigurdsson and the Welsh side coolly worked Routledge in down the right to deliver a cross that Moore, just on as a substitute for Graham, headed beyond Hart's despairing dive.

All over the place: Manchester City's Mario Balotelli and Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm fight for the ball

Battle: Manchester City's Mario Balotelli contests for the ball with Swansea's Ashley Williams

Vorm made an acrobatic save to keep out a Kolo Toure effort with City in desperate need of a response.
Mancini's men thought they had salvaged a point when Richards headed in as Vorm came and failed to reach a cross, but the full-back was correctly ruled offside, before the Dutch keeper kept out Edin Dzeko's looping header.
Sinclair almost added a second in added time as Swansea broke after Hart had gone up for a corner, but his strike from halfway came up short of the line as the keeper recovered.
