<SPAN class=art-text>FIFA and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa (OC) held their first Media Day for South African journalists in Johannesburg, South Africa. Over 100 journalists from different disciplines were in attendance, and were given presentations by the OC and FIFA, sketching a broad overview of the FIFA World Cup, and specifically what it meant for South African journalists.

Dr Irvin Khoza, the Chairman of the OC, welcomed the media, saying that the inaugural Media Day "represents a landmark on the road to 2010."

Director of Communications for FIFA, Markus Siegler, made presentations on FIFA as an organisation and the FIFA World Cup, while other members of his team presented on the services available to the media via FIFA.com.

LOC Communications Manager, Tumi Makgabo, made a presentation on the 'Road to 2010' which detailed the operational phases the OC will be embarking on. The newly appointed Director of Marketing and Communications at the LOC, Tim Modise, outlined the roles and responsibilities of the OC. No stranger to South African media, Modise also encouraged a collaboration between the OC and the media to keep the public informed on the progress of the FIFA World Cup.

There were members from all major press organisations, including television and newspapers. Editor of one of South Africa's top football magazines, Richard Maguire from Kick-off, emphasised: "It is important to have a two-way street between the media and the Organising Committee." He added that he thought "FIFA have been useful because they have fairly clear guidelines and they are fairly relaxed around the use of editorial marks. This is quite significant and a lot less restrictive, it is an intelligent thing."<TABLE class=textblack11px_normal id=IMGTAB height=150 cellSpacing=3 cellPadding=0 width=150 align=left summary="" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR><TR id=TRCAP><TD vAlign=bottom align=left><SPAN class=textblack11px_normal>South African 2010 LOC Chairman Irvin Khoza makes an opening address to the media during FIFA's First 2010 South African Media Day in Johannesburg.</SPAN></TD></TR><TR id=TRAUTHOR><TD align=left><SPAN class=textblack11px_bold>Gavin Barker/Backpagepix</SPAN></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

    Your questions please!
An interesting aspect to the Media Day, was a question and answer session after each presentation. A selection of the questions and their answers are below.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
